my wife thanks you, dear friend

Ya, I get it that this is the whole joke of the post, but I'm bemused to discover that I'm a slutt datafag.
I had not anticipated climbing to such a pinnacle in my lifetime.

I have never heard anyone call computer science "datafag", it's usually called "informatikk" (like "informatics" which you can also say in English), and "slutt" just means end or stop, I have never heard anyone use it to refer to graduating.

"Fag" does mean "subject" or "field of study", though, so computer science is a "fag", and it might be considered a "realfag" along with the natural sciences, I don't know.

Edit: I got corrected below, "datafag" is real

[–] markjamestwn1301@scribe.disroot.org 2 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago)

Ah, cognate to the German „Fach“ and the English “fact”. That makes sense.

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago

Keep in mind this is Google translate

[–] JoeBigelow@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What newfags and oldfags? Can one triforce while the other cannot?

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Shit... now I want to know what triforcing is

It doesn't matter. You wouldn't be able to do it anyway.

My dad did 'datafag' some 50 years ago, at least I think they called it that. It was the era of 'hullkort' (punchcards). Also I think it should be sluttdatafag all in one word. I seem to remember some old folks referring to graduate degrees as sluttfag. I dont think anyone has ever put 'data' in the middle there though. Sounds like AI hallucination.

[–] ChristerMLB@piefed.social 2 points 18 hours ago

You are right, in fact it's still possible to study datafag, I stand corrected: https://uit.no/utdanning/program/795103/informatikk_datafag_-_bachelor

With regards to "sluttfag", I couldn't find anything real, but Google's AI summary says "Et sluttfag er et fag på videregående skole som blir avsluttet med en standpunktkarakter det gjeldende skoleåret" - so it's the final year of a subject that gives you a grade on your high-school diploma... according to a language model :l

[–] OddMinus1@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

To pull you back just a little "slutt datafag" is an expression for the subject which you are graduating. Or maybe google reads it as a verb + noun, since "slutt" means "stop" or "end" and assumes that "end" means "graduate" in this context. Anyways I don't think it makes sense as a description for a person.

But you are free to call yourself a "fagperson". This is a very common phrase to describe a person with education.

[–] dbtng@eviltoast.org 2 points 1 day ago

Oh sure. I get to be a slutt datafag for 6 hours, and then you come along and ruin it. Thanks!

[–] RedIce25@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

Slutt is end not graduate

[–] Pissmidget@lemmy.world 43 points 1 day ago (11 children)

Bottom one is more stop/end computer class, does not imply graduation, though fag is generally used as tradecraft. Which makes the books you use for it fag literature.

[–] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago

It is now safe to turn off your computer

New datafag cannot triforce!

Neither can I, special characters misbehave here :( lol

[–] f4f4f4f4f4f4f4f4@sopuli.xyz 24 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Since putting in the effort to make it, I had to talk myself out of setting it as a custom BIOS logo on a PC at work.

[–] SourDragon@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Does that mean I became a slutt on graduation day?

[–] vandsjov@feddit.dk 2 points 17 hours ago

A work slutt

[–] mastertigurius@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (3 children)

Just wait till you hear about popular Norwegian names, like Simen (pronounced exactly the way you think).

Also make sure you mind your fart when on the road. Norwegian police are quite strict about that and could give you a fartsbot if you don't comply.

[–] SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago)

Simen and his seamen friends are Norsemen

[–] myyass@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

lol reminds me of when I worked in education; there was this hearing impaired kid. On the playground they're playing shop, his dad must have been a construction worker or something. He yells at the top of his voice, does anyone want to buy some Simen (He was trying to say cement)? We, staff, had to discuss should we let him know or not, went with just laughing it off.

[–] mastertigurius@lemmy.world 2 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

That was the right thing to do. 😄

[–] myyass@lemmy.world 1 points 20 hours ago

Hehe yeah, I'm not sure how to explain that to a second grader.

[–] tauonite@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

It's not the fart that kills you, it's the smell

[–] NeilNuggetstrong@lemmy.world 23 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Realfag is the study of natural sciences and mathematics

Just wait until you hear about the swedish slutstation

[–] whoneedsgravy@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 day ago

I ride the bus to the slutstation every day.

[–] GladiusB@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Swedes don't count - from a Norwegian

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

This is true. I'm like half Swedish, and I am a musician. I do not count. I listen for my cue and learn the tune instead of counting rests.

My boss put me on inventory once when I kept coming up with a different number of mops in the storeroom.

For the record, we had one.

[–] GladiusB@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Can confirm. You can't count.

[–] Gork@sopuli.xyz 10 points 1 day ago

[–] AllNewTypeFace@leminal.space 16 points 1 day ago (2 children)

On graduation, you get a fursuit

[–] audaxdreik@pawb.social 6 points 1 day ago

Common misconception, the fursuit helps your chances of graduating. Kind of a survivorship bias, thing. Once saw a guy get dragged down the hall and FNAFed into a wolf suit. She's happy now.

[–] BilSabab@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Datafag Slut sounds like some kink. Kinkshaming is not nice.

[–] how_we_burned@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 day ago

The irony is i was a total slut for both data and sex

[–] onipa@feddit.org 8 points 1 day ago (4 children)

If you pronounce "fag" like a Dutch, a German would here "Fach" which translates to (school-)subject

[–] ChristerMLB@piefed.social 7 points 1 day ago

yep, or "field of study", so if you study in Norway, students who study the same might arrange a "fagfest" together, and a skilled worker is often known as a "fagarbeider"
