While browsing through the privacy community, I read about the BraX3. A new privacy centric phone developed by YouTube content creator Robert Braxman.

Before I support their IndyGoGo, I'd like to get your opinions about the company and their last phone, the BraX2, which apparently didn't get the most glowing reviews.

Braxman makes very hyperbolic videos to sell you his shit.

very sketchy, would not trust.

[–] novacomets@lemmy.myserv.one 5 points 16 hours ago

If you look through Braxman's content history, he never does a video showing how to flash a phone, he only talks about it. You can do a search and from random videos from people you've never seen before doing step by step showing how to unlock a phone, flash it, and lock bootloader, Braxman shows nothing.

Look at hist website from 1995. He uses buzzwords. There are free website builder tools that can make a website more flashy than his. I question his skill level of what he can do vs what he has someone else do and then he takes the credit to sell.

It would be cheaper to buy any Pixel and then flash any custom ROM yourself, rather than pay an extra $100 for flashed phone that you can do in 10 minutes.

I flash GrapheneOS for free because I only touch the computer for a few steps, the rest of it is waiting for the installer to finish and automatically reboot phone.

Just buy a Pixel and flash GrapheneOS on it. Or if you want a challenge, then buy a Samsung phone with an Exynos chip in it and flash some GSI (generic system image) on it.

I've gotten this advice a bajillion times. It's not the worst advice, but the Pixels just aren't very good. They lack basic hardware prerequisites like an sd card slot and audio jack (which the Brax3 would have).

[–] DieserTypMatthias@lemmy.ml 1 points 5 hours ago

That's why I also suggested a Samsung phone.

I think Millenials and zoomers forgot about the oldest, most important axiom of Youtube: If it's being advertised or sold by Youtubers, it's likely a scam!

Thanks, that's helpful

If his primary credential is "YouTube content creator," that's probably a hard pass.

[–] Dran_Arcana@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think that holds true in this case... but I'll be damned if the ltt screwdriver isn't the best hand tool I've ever owned.

Looks at my 15y old WERA.. Ok...

The website uses google services while promoting a phone that advertises avoiding google services... And it seems to be completely broken for me on any android browser I use. Also his main website seems to use the Microsoft store logo for his store logo lol

720 display?, it doesn't say it has a removable battery? and can somehow promise years of software updates when they rely on third party custom ROMs for their software..

Also I don't know of any android phones that block replacing the battery?

The website says 6GB RAM and the indiegogo page says 8GB RAM

The hardware seems meh and the software is based on FOSS ROMs that support a wide variety of devices that actually exist. Ubuntu touch is advertised as Coming Soon™

The BraX3 phone offers the most privacy-friendly location service through the Lunar Network

Please anyone who can find the Lunar Network website, link it because right now to me it seems they're using a now defunct minecraft server for location services

I've got scammy vibes from this guy for years, even when I was new to privacy I never felt like he was reliable. Did he dub himself "the internet privacy guy" lol

Overall, I think the phone will probably come out at some point, it'll be kinda sucky from a hardware perspective for anyone who is used to mid range phones and the software could be fine or it could be buggy AF but I don't think it'll be anything special or offer anything unique enough from a privacy perspective to bother with.

I don't think he can guarantee software updates as he has no control over the ROMs he relies on and I would not expect any sort of support for bugs etc. I don't think he is knowledgeable enough to trust not to have privacy/security issues with the phone, especially when his whole shtick is "privacy"

It sucks that headphone jacks and sd cards are so hard to find in phones today but I'd prefer to use a dongle and external storage or self host and have a better refurbished phone running LineageOS or any other degoogled ROM than trust this guy.

No. Just install GrapheneOS for free yourself

[–] ISOmorph@feddit.org 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (3 children)

Show me a decent phone with SD card slot, replacable battery and a headphone jack I can install Graphene on and I'm set!

[–] novacomets@lemmy.myserv.one 2 points 16 hours ago

Pixel 5a is the last phone with a 3.5" headphone jack.

[–] Dust0741@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Unfortunately you can get a secure phone OR that. No overlap.

Edit: maybe one day

[–] ReversalHatchery@beehaw.org 4 points 1 day ago

my phone does not have a headphone jack anymore and I totally agree with you. I can't use my phone anymore for something that I did with it a lot in the past

[–] lefaucet@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 day ago

I liked my Brax phone. It died when I jumped in the pool with it, but it was great!

Now have a fair phone. I like it too 🥰

[–] goofus@lemmy.today 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I am waiting for my Brax3 phone. I am thinking about requesting a refund. I have heard that a Pixel phone with Graphene is a much better choice.

[–] ISOmorph@feddit.org 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

One of the reasons I was excited for the Brax3 was the headphone jack. Pixels don't have them anymore

[–] furrowsofar@beehaw.org 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Look at FairPhone. I got a Pixel 8a recently and flashed Graphene and I think this is the best tradeoff but I understand wanting jack etc, as I would have liked too.

In hind site for me, turns out Blutooth is great as it works well with my OTC hearing aids and my Bluetooth headphones too. I liked the hearing aide support as it gives me proper calibrated sound where generic stuff will not.

Email from April 11:

BraX3 April Project Update

Hi everyone,

We’re back with an important update covering three key areas: how we’re adapting to the newly imposed U.S. tariffs, how that change can impact backers, and a short update on our beta program.

Let’s dive in. For U.S. Customers: Navigating the Tariff Challenge Together

We’ve always aimed to do things differently—with more transparency, fairness, and user-first thinking. This moment is no exception.

From the start, we made a conscious decision to ship BraX3 domestically within the U.S.—not from China like most crowdfunded projects. This was meant to save you money and avoid the hassle of customs clearance.

But the recent escalation in trade tensions has changed the landscape. The U.S. has now imposed a 145% tariff on Chinese electronics, making it financially impossible for us to import BraX3 as originally planned without significant losses.

Most companies either freeze deliveries or push 100% of the added cost onto customers. We won’t do that.

Instead, we’ve made a bold move: we’re shifting final assembly to the European Union. This change allows us to:

Regain control of our delivery timeline

Minimize the impact of unpredictable tariff complications

Maintain momentum and keep our promises

Of course, this change adds cost—logistics, disassembly, reassembly, and EU compliance. We’re absorbing the majority of it, but we are asking U.S. customers for a $30 contribution to help close the gap.

Here’s what to expect:

In the next 2 weeks, you’ll receive an email with a secure portal

Through that portal, you can:

    Pay the $30 surcharge

    Add accessories to your order

    Update your shipping information

Full refunds will be available if you decide not to proceed—no questions asked

We know this isn’t ideal, and we wouldn’t ask unless it was truly necessary. But we believe this approach keeps us aligned with the values that brought us all together.

A Note on Delivery Timeline Impact

With the shift to EU-based assembly, we’re also adjusting our estimated delivery timeline.

The logistics of transferring partially assembled units, reassembling them in the EU, and completing the necessary production steps will require an additional 20 days. This pushes our U.S. shipping window to approximately mid-end May 2025.

Additionally, to ensure the product’s EU origin is recognized for customs compliance, there’s a regulatory process we must follow. While we’re working hard to keep this smooth and timely, there’s still a chance it could introduce a few more days of delay—though we’re doing everything possible to avoid that.

We know this isn’t what anyone hoped for, but we also believe this approach gives us greater control, higher quality assurance, and the best path forward under the current global circumstances.

For Non-U.S. Customers: Optional Upgrade to EU Assembly

For our backers outside the U.S., your BraX3 is still set to ship with the original China-based assembly.

However, this shift has also opened up a new opportunity: we’re now offering an optional upgrade to the EU-assembled version of BraX3—bringing the same improvements we’re implementing for U.S. deliveries.

Why consider the upgrade?

Enhanced quality control and handling during final assembly

Compliance with European manufacturing and security standards

Alignment with the changes being made for U.S. units

In the coming weeks, all customers, regardless of location, will receive an email with a link to a dedicated order management portal. Through this portal, you’ll be able to:

Upgrade to the EU-assembled version for $30 (optional)

Add accessories to your existing order

Update your delivery details
Pay VAT as per our terms in the FAQ section (EU-based customers only)

We believe the EU-assembled version adds real value—but if you're happy with the original assembly plan, no action is needed. Your order will proceed as originally planned.

Beta Devices Are Out & Feedback is Rolling In

We’re also happy to report that the BraX3 beta devices have been shipped and received by most of the selected testers.

Feedback is already flowing in, and we’re addressing bugs with quick turnaround. It’s encouraging to see iodeOS progressing right on schedule, and we’re confident in our momentum toward a stable production release.

In Closing

We’re doing our best to handle real-world challenges with integrity, creativity, and community in mind. Whether you’re a U.S. customer facing a new decision, or a global backer looking to benefit from these improvements—we’re here to make sure the result is still something we can all be proud of.

Thank you for your continued support, trust, and patience.

Plamen

p.s. We recommend listening to the latest live stream on Rob's channel, where he addresses the challenges and shares our thought process in greater detail.
