Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

If you want to actually try and do something about it, call your rep and your senators — people got the provisions to sell off public land removed, so other changes are possible too

If calling my reps and senators made a difference we wouldn’t be in this mess in the first place.

I know, I’ve been calling them for decades.

Seriously.

It is incredibly naive to think you can just politely ask someone to go against their vested interests.

Decades of history have shown that in situations like these, the people need to employ direct action and force the ruling powers that be to capitulate to demands of the people or see their authority dismantled and replaced with one that will.

What do you mean? You don't like getting automated messages informing you that while your opinion is very important to Senator Bloodfeast, he has opted to continue to go against your best interests, and here's why that's actually good for you and you're a stupid idiot for thinking otherwise?

Only four Republican Senators need to vote no in order to kill the bill. With two—Tillis and Paul—already saying they will oppose it, that leaves just two more Senators. Murkowski and Curtis are considered the most likely to oppose the anti-renewable provisions, according to one Senate staffer we spoke to.

They had better not pass this...

It's performative. They will.

Let’s be optimistic: has anyone tried bribing the senators more than they are bring paid by the others? I’m sure they are very reasonable and business minded people

Really? They thought it couldn't get any worse? hahaha

Surely endless exponential economic growth measured quarterly will be able to solve this? Many people say those CEOs are great guys! Much greatness
