i wish russia would just fucking accept that it lost already.

[–] Hubi@feddit.org 29 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Russia wouldn't admit defeat even if Zelensky was giving interviews on the Red Square right now. The only way they stop is if their government ceases to exist and the propaganda falls silent.

[–] Draegur@lemm.ee 10 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Sounds like Russia needs to cease to exist then. If only that were possible...

Russia cease to exist. China: It's free real state

[–] Draegur@lemm.ee 9 points 4 days ago

~~honestly if it means the end of russia i'm ready to embrace the millennium of chinese suprem--~~ what the fuck am i SAYING jesus fucking CHRIST this is how a finger on the monkey's paw curls @_@

concentrated power in the hands of ANY single authority is bad news for the entire species... shit's gonna turn out how it turns out and I won't be tempting fate any further than i already have >_<

...not like it's terribly likely i'll live to see it. Pretty sure the venn diagram representing civilians who resisted nazi occupation with lethal force vs the civilians who survived is very thin sliver of overlap if any exists at all, and I'm honestly not sure if I'd rather be emotionally psychologically and spiritually dead from complicity with abject evil OR ALTERNATIVELY just in the literal sense by punitive execution by the rampant tyranny of the state...

Historically speaking this is kind of the problem with fighting Russia. You can kill so many more of them than they kill of you and then they just keep coming.

They are also extremely competent in turning conquered populations into meat squads. With centuries of experience. Which should terrify anyone sitting on the far side of conquered countries.

This is the reason they want Ukraine.

Natural resources and free slaves to dig them up.

[–] Valmond@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

Free meat waves into poland and the baltics.

[–] Valmond@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Works less good when you can pick them off with modern weapons but yeah fuck them hard.

Decimates half? So they destroyed 5%?

And some people clearly don’t like a joke, right?

[–] TransplantedSconie@lemm.ee 7 points 5 days ago (1 children)

300 to 400 soldiers.

Typical Russian battalion is 600 to 800.

[–] Hubbubbub@fedia.io -4 points 5 days ago (4 children)

The word 'decimates' means to eliminate 10%. So if used correctly, it means that 30 to 40 Russians were killed. The word is hardly ever used correctly.

[–] just2look@lemm.ee 33 points 5 days ago (1 children)

That may have been the original definition, but words evolve. One of the definitions from the Merriam-Webster dictionary is β€˜to cause great destruction or harm to’. So it is used correctly by modern definitions.

Let's still be considerate to those time traveling from the Roman Empire.

decimate /dΔ•sβ€²Ι™-mātβ€³/

transitive verb

  1. To destroy or kill a large part of (a group of people or organisms).

  2. To inflict great destruction or damage on.

    "The storm decimated the region."

  3. To reduce markedly in amount.

"a profligate heir who decimated his trust fund."

While some of the other definitions are "to take a tenth of" or "one out of every ten", the top three are usually the most common usage of the word in modern times.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

A professional journalist should know it, though.

Maybe they decimated them 6-7 times

Wow we see how smart you are, now go back to reading thesaurus.
