Maliciously written header, it's not about tourists, it's about USA immigrants who move to México but earn in dollars and pay no taxes, so obviously the market is trying to squeeze them leaving out the rest of the mexicans who can't keep up with the prices (in every aspect).

Then again, this was caused by the now president who basically gave free reign to airbnb so she and her party could benefit from that money.
But lemmy says I'm wrong for criticising a fake leftist.

Graffiti on glass shattered glass being smashed through with rocks read: “get out of Mexico.” Protesters held signs reading “gringos, stop stealing our home”

There is some humor in them complaining about white people being there while the US complains about them being here.

People everywhere are racist as fuck. 😅

The difference is that the the Latinos in the United States are therr because they have to be to survive; meanwhile the Americans in Mexico are there to take advantage of the fucked up situation that their American empire created in Mexico.

One is a necessity and the other is good ole American racism.

the other is good ole American racism

Good ole American colonialism.

There's a difference though, Mexico has had a huge influx of US remote workers who basically hang out as tourists and literally are gentrifying Mexico City and raising the cost of living because locals can't compete with the wages the US citizens get in US dollars, which are (currently) more valuable than the Mexican Peso. This absolutely raises the cost of living as the city begins to cater more and more to US remote workers and less and less to the actual citizens of Mexico City.

Here's an article on it from as far back as 2023: https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/mexico-city-gentification-americans-rent-prices/3231544/

But Mexico City is most likely my cheap and easy go-to escape plan for if/when shit hits the fan in the U.S. I wonder if others had the same thought.

[–] GreyEyedGhost@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 hours ago

What exactly is the threshold you're waiting for on this escape plan?

Stay in the US and clean up your own fucking messes instead of expecting the countries the US has exploited the living shit out of to achieve your high quality of life in the US to take care of your removed ass. The fucking entitlement. Mexico doesn't owe you a fucking escape hatch.

They’re in Mexico because they can’t afford to live in the states. My rental equivalent in Mexico is like 50-70% lower. I’m being paid the same as I was in 2013. My rent has almost tripled.

They can cry all they want—I need to live too. And as we all know the people who own those places don’t care but the citizens have to think. They will smash some windows and gentrification will roll in anyway. This is because no one is willing to scream upwards

[–] HK65@sopuli.xyz 15 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

You realise Mexicans screaming upwards will result in you getting deported back to the US, right?

[–] madlian@lemmy.cafe 1 points 2 hours ago

Who is “you” in that sentence? Them? I don’t think Mexicans get deported to the US.

Americans, always the entitled pricks of the world.

[–] madlian@lemmy.cafe 1 points 1 hour ago

Being priced out of the life you had before and finding another cheaper place to live is an experience only found in the USA. /s

Complaining about life being unfair is something only people from the USA do. /s

Getting pissed off about gentrification is something only found in Mexico /s

Btw, Mexico is in America

Possibly unpopular opinion but fuck them tourists.

I feel bad for the trashed businesses, as they tend to be at least locally owned.

[–] k0e3@lemmy.ca 7 points 9 hours ago

I live in a touristy party of Japan and it's quite overwhelming. I feel the same as you most of the time, but I like travelling too and I love hosting friends who come. I just think the government and businesses need to make use of the tourists other than milk them for money and treat them like royalty.

At least where I live, I would like for tourists to learn about our history and have them clean up our beaches. It'd be nice of they raised a fuss about our lack of public transportation and clean energy too, since the government only listens to those who are willing to spend money here.

[–] ms_lane@lemmy.world 6 points 15 hours ago (2 children)

The businesses that won't survive without tourism?

[–] ByteJunk@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

Mass tourism.

Mass tourism is a cancer that needs to be irradiated from any proper city. That shit brings very little money, and mobs of unruly, uneducated dimwits that think they own someone's soul because they spent €5 on a couple of the cheapest drinks on the menu.

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago) (1 children)

Accounting for the metropolitan area population, Mexico City is the fifth largest city in the world. If your business can't survive without tourists in that environment, something is wrong with the business, not the lack of tourism.

[–] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 5 points 13 hours ago

I mean… if you live there do you really need a hotel? There are lots of businesses that cater specifically to tourists.
