It was literally the point of them: massive corporations taking equity away from local communities.

Other than the paltry poverty-wages they pay employees, almost every dollar that locals spend in a big box store leaves town and travels straight into some billionaire pocket.
Better a store you can go check stuff out in before you buy ... than looking at pictures on a screen and hoping it's what it pretends to be.
