Is 4chan actually being auctioned off?

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

But seems they are not going back online. Like many sites were hacked they fixed it and is back why this one doesn't?

[–] Derpenheim@lemmy.zip 35 points 1 week ago (2 children)

a 16 year old made the site over a decade ago and they've just layered spaghetti onto that shitty ass code, and in doing so allowed everyone that's ever worked on it to be doxxed. So to put it back up, they'd have to fix all that spaghet. Not exactly a weekend job

[–] then_three_more@lemmy.world 24 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Sorry to make you feel old.

[–] Derpenheim@lemmy.zip 15 points 1 week ago

How fucking dare you

[–] S_H_K@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If I'm 14 and this is deep
And I'm 15 and this is yeet Here is I'm 16 and this is shieeeet ?
Now seriously it's an impressive feat for a 16 year old to do that but still moreso nobody did a proper update of the codebase WTF!?

Hard to do on a running system with shitty code without just losing the entire database

[–] CaptDust@sh.itjust.works 19 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

They have two challenges working against them: the user database was compromised and doxxed everyone - makes it less likely the staff and audience returns. Then the source code was leaked as well, exposing a massive amount of vulnerabilities that were never patched over the years. With the vulnerabilities public now, it's unlikely the admins can relaunch before fixing it. Most assume they don't have the resources to reach a secure state.

Hell yeah. I'll miss some of the porn, at least the last of it that wasn't weird racebait, but it needed to die ten or fifteen years ago.

[–] S_H_K@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 week ago

Porn gore and all the shit it had. It was a cesspit really it baffles me how they evaded most of the accountability anyone would be subjected to.

[–] synicalx@lemm.ee 7 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Complete rumour and hearsay from Discord, but allegedly a current/former mod is claiming they’ll relaunch sometime on the 21st but only about 1/4 of the boards will be up due to a lack of jannies.

The vulnerabilities found in the codebase were… sizeable to say the least. I assume the extended downtime is to patch the ones they can, and disable features for the ones they can’t + needing to replace a big chunk of the mods and jannies.

Unpaid mod, with less “powers” than a normal mod.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Thanks. Is that a term specific to 4chan?

[–] Vegasvator@lemmy.today 15 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

No. You can use the term jannies on reddit. Calling sub moderators jannies on reddit really triggers them. They know exactly what it means. It's their unpaid job to clean up the mess I make on their subs and they get paid nothing for it. It puts into perspective that being a jannie isn't cool

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

I sense Australia

[–] Kaboom@reddthat.com -3 points 1 week ago

They are a normal mod. If they're paid, they're admins.

[–] S_H_K@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 week ago

In general terms Janitor are mods and other unpaid staff related to social networks. I really don't know how it applies to 4chan since I evaded that site like the plague.

[–] S_H_K@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Is somewhat believable really, I'll goosip it around and deform it according to protocol.

[–] synicalx@lemm.ee 18 points 1 week ago (2 children)

By servers I assume we mean the pile of Mac Minis.

[–] ptz@dubvee.org 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If true, that's like the one thing about them I wouldn't judge . I've run more on less hardware than that. lol

[–] synicalx@lemm.ee 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Oh yeah no shade at all, it’s cheap and efficient

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

What about expensive and inefficient, like an IBM PC-Convertible?

[–] REDACTED@infosec.pub -2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Correct if I'm wrong, but macs don't even have 10gbit ethernet, which at this point is ancient tech for servers and memory costs like gold bars, not even talking about the fact that most services are designed for linux. Mac seems like a bad and expensive choice for servers. Raspberry sounds like a better choice for self-hosting if we're talking about that

[–] realitista@lemm.ee 2 points 1 week ago

I'm guessing they were the old upgradeable ones or that they didn't have significant need for memory or internal storage. Those are the only use cases where Macs make financial sense any more. On newer Macs you can attach external storage that's as fast as the internal storage so you don't have to pay the 10x uplift on storage prices at least. I'm still running the last version with upgradeable RAM and have all the storage external.

And now all the 4chan users scatter, but will need a new site Coming soon to your favorite social media page...

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 9 points 1 week ago

Scp-4chan has escaped containment. Red alert all moderators to their stations.

[–] daepicgamerbro69@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

context? is 4chan already cannibalizing their hardware?
