Youtube shorts - aka the Tiktokization of Youtube.

I can't stand the format. Luckily, they can be filtered out in third party players.

I mean. Let's be real here Vine did it before Tik Tok was even a sperm in Bytedance's ballsac. And it's not like YouTube didn't start out with short form videos. It's just that they didn't make it a separate video feed until 2020.

I can certainly understand not liking shorts (I often don't have that kind of attention/need something more substantial than a 60 second clip). And yeah. Hatred for YouTube. I hear you. I get that too. But like this isn't a new phenomenon.

Loops is a Fediverse equivalent.

It is not a medium that interests me, I have found the content on Loops to be mediocre.

That said, I have found the content on TikTok to also be mediocre and YouTube clips are just jailbait clickbait.

Yes, I know it is algorithm generated, but I am pretty sure everyone is just getting jailbait clickbait.

Most of what I watch on YouTube are science videos, history videos, and cooking videos. I don't get the "jailbait click bait" and I have never gotten that. My biggest problem with YouTube besides their ad BS is the random right wing propaganda videos that creep in.

I don't watch a lot of shorts but if I happen to see one it's most definitely not "jailbait".

I have seen title cards change on unwatched videos from something that is innocuous and directly related to the content to something with a scantily clad female, tangentially related to the video who is much younger than me.

While not technically Jailbait, the title cards are sexualised.

I mainly watch renovation, restoration, cinema, off-roading, engineering and fabrication.

The majority of this content is male-dominated and I do appreciate when videos aren’t bursting with aggressive machismo. I think the algorithm has determined that when I watch a video with a female host it is because it thinks I am being pervy.

Any browser extension filters?

If you are using ublock Origin you can just select the section of the page that shows the shorts and block it with the element picker.

Sweet! Hadn't noticed that feature.

[July 2025] Updates to YouTube Partner Program (YPP) Monetization policies: In order to monetize as part of the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), YouTube has always required creators to upload “original” and "authentic" content. On July 15, 2025, YouTube is updating our guidelines to better identify mass-produced and repetitious content. This update better reflects what “inauthentic” content looks like today.

So essentially, if you’re going to have a channel of AI garbage, Google wants to ensure you to use their tools to make it.

There are browser addons that hide youtube shorts.

This is a good reminder to delete Google Photos.

Edit: Google removed delete from their API. Here's a browser automation script https://github.com/mrishab/google-photos-delete-tool

Edit 2: done. I started with ~23 years of photos in google photos. Now there are zero photos left.
