I've been to over 50 countries in all seven continents, and I've lived in four of those. Never did I feel anything that I would would describe as fear.
I will be travelling to the US for an exchange program next month. I am afraid. To the point I am actually considering cancelling what could be a career changing opportunity.
I would consider canceling any dealings with US if said person isn't white, even that is a stretch for this dogshit administration. I hope we see a general protest by making the World Cup barren.

Is the opportunity "once in a lifetime" or can you find alternatives like Europe? Tbh things are too fucked up now, even I am afraid to travel there a few weeks to visit.
I am in the US, and I despise what's going on. So please do not take what I am about to say as a defense to what is happening here.
Things are pretty extreme right now, but they aren't as bad as the extreme left media is making it out to be. I find news articles posted on Lemmy are often sensationalized. There are 100% things we need to worry about, and things I myself am fighting (most everything the orange man does). But I do not think it is so bad you should cancel a big opportunity for yourself. Obviously things are happening to people, but most people are traveling to and from the US without any issues. You aren't going to hear reports about all the people who didn't have any issues while traveling.
I do not think there is reason to believe anything would happen to you. The right doesn't want you here, so they absolutely aren't going to keep you here as a prisoner. If they wanted you out, you would gladly leave on your own accord and cover all the expenses. They wouldn't spend more money making you leave if you don't want to be here anyway.

How funny will it be when all of the seats are empty? Americans don't care about soccer, this event will be funded by tourism and now those folks will be opting out. If I were planning this event I'd be livid. Vance, shut your stupid fucking mouth and never speak again as long as you live.

I know FIFA is corrupt but does anyone not see how dangerous traveling to the United States currently is?
Soccer fans have below average concern for world politics, in my experience.
Because what we really want from our government officials is more laughing at the pain and suffering of others.
that, and to chill anyone that MIGHT come to America for the American games out of coming to America for the American games and ensure America doesnt get any of that sweet tourism money.
5 bucks says Mexico and Canada's stadiums are full, while Americas stadiums are maybe..lets be generous and say 1/3rd full, and I'd wager most of that would be from super low cost tickets in desperation to get people in the seats so it doesnt look completely empty during broadcast.

Honestly I don't think they are. They literally decided they were fine with committing treason, and their overall plan is probably similar to the bullshit great replacement theory they push. Except that they are literally selling the country out from under us, and will eventually start having ANYONE deported if they aren't a cooperative slave, or part of the plan. As Americans disappear, I guarantee that more Russians and saudis will come into the country.

Fortunately, if this shit keeps up, there are two other countries where to celebrate matches. Mexico is shaping up nicely for the World Cup, and tourism comes natural to our culture.
That its being co hosted will backfire on the US. If it was just the US and nobody turned up they can and will blame football for that rather than their own idiocy, but because Mexico and Canada are also hosting matches if they get great attendance then its clearly an issue with the US.
If you want to go, go to the matches in Mexico or Canada, spend your money there.

As long as MAGA policies and the walking farts responsible for them are in place/in charge, I will never again set foot on US soil. There are plenty of other places to visit.
