This brandsnap app requires a subscription to be useful.. one that an american company then takes a 30% cut from

Not if you are on an iPhone and get it from their app store. Apple was ordered to allow out-of-store payments, so if the app implements that, it'll bypass Apple's 30%.

Google does, and they have always allowed third party installs and sideloading.
