From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

I recently took a look at latest Solus, it's a nice distro and budgie a nice DE. I feel like it's a nice option for those making the jump from Windows. Wish more people came across it.

Funny, just a couple of nights ago, I was wondering if this distro still exists. I tried it some 5 years ago and I found it sleek, but its reliance on systemd made me migrate.

Is this project still a dumpster fire?

[–] Mark12870@lemmy.world 2 points 22 hours ago

Not at all. This distro works really well for some time now. I mean the people around it changed and they changed the organisation structure, not depending on one person like it was before. If you are interested here is what has changed in 2023 to not be in same situation again: https://getsol.us/2023/04/18/a-new-voyage/

Also the communication is great. I would say maybe even the best of all distros. They do a report like this every week regrading software updates and what is happening around Solus: https://discuss.getsol.us/d/12033-solus-update-post-for-week-42-2025
