A rural medical clinic in Nebraska — located in a district that President Donald Trump won by more than 50 points in the 2024 election — is being forced to close its doors, with its CEO citing federal cuts to Medicaid as the main reason behind the shutdown.

The closure comes just days after Republicans pushed through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, a sweeping tax cuts and spending package that includes deep reductions to Medicaid. The bill passed in the House by a 218-214 vote, with every Democrat and two Republicans opposing it. Trump is expected to sign it into law on July 4.

The legislation aims to fulfill Trump’s signature campaign promises — including making permanent the tax cuts that overwhelmingly benefit wealthy Americans and ramping up funding for immigration enforcement. To offset those costs, the bill imposes large spending cuts on Medicaid and food assistance programs, which critics argue will devastate working-class, low-income, and elderly Americans — particularly those in rural red states.

Community Hospital, based in McCook, Nebraska, announced this week that it will shut down its rural clinic in Curtis, a town of about 900 residents.

“Unfortunately, the current financial environment, driven by anticipated federal budget cuts to Medicaid, has made it impossible for us to continue operating all of our services, many of which have faced significant financial challenges for years,” said Community Hospital CEO Troy Bruntz in a statement on Wednesday.

And as you'd expect, with their hospital closing, they remain loyal to Trump, refusing to believe that the funding cuts had anything to do with the closure. That everyone is just picking on Trump and using him as a convenient excuse.

It's a cult.

The cost is borne by us,” [Sharon Jorgensen, 73] declared. “To us, it’s health, not politics.”

Yeah, us leftists have been saying Free Universal Healthcare for years, but you keep politicizing your own health. Now try to solve your health without begging to feds.

What matters is that they suffer. It matters less if they understand why.

[–] shiftymccool@piefed.ca 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

No, the whole point is for them to know, to understand that they did this to themselves

[–] sundray@lemmus.org 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

If that is the case, 99% of the links posted in this comm should be removed. We keep seeing people negatively effected by their own choices, voting against their self interests, and yet doubling down. Regretful MAGAs are exceedingly rare.

I think we need to come to some consensus on what we're doing here. Are we a community of hope, looking for evidence of changing hearts and minds? Or are we community of people bitterly laughing at the self-inflicted misfortune of racist, homophobic, xenophobic, pro-fascist creeps, knowing there's no hope left for American democracy?

Hope for those who may slip into the Q-hole. The problem is once you're deep, not only can't you get out, but you become nothing but a tool to make others suffer, and laughing at them when the favor is returned is a deterrent to those who may FAFO in the future.

You have described torture.
The same torture Nebraskans committed on immigrants who laboured their farms.
The same immigrants being death encamped.

[–] sundray@lemmus.org 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Losing a hospital by their own hand is hardly equivalent to being forcibly disappeared and sent to concentration camps.

[–] AntiBullyRanger@ani.social 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Glad we agree then, that Nebraskans’ means do not justify their consequences for mass slaughter.

Have the day you voted for ✨

But I voted for whoeve[R]!

This is clearly the fault of the Democrats!

  • The GOP and their base, unironically
[–] bagsy@lemmy.world 40 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

McCook is also where the new ICE detentention center is located. So the "good" people of McCook traded their only hospital for an ICE concentration camp.

[–] philpo@feddit.org 4 points 2 weeks ago

Well, if only the US federal goverment would provide adequate care for people in that facility, that would very likely create enough additional business for the hospital to survive.

If only....

Rather than complain, be the change you want to see in the world.

This took me all of 30s to do.

[–] Valmond@lemmy.world 13 points 3 weeks ago

Bull shit bill shut. Nice

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 12 points 3 weeks ago

One bill to rule them all, and in the darkness bind them.

They should rename the town Mordor.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 12 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Our health care system was already choking the life out of rural healthcare. Talk about nails in coffins!

One would think the GOP would be wise enough to, if not take care of their voters, at least avoid harming them.

Interesting there was a clinic in a town of 900. My camp sits outside a town of 900 and I wouldn't expect a clinic. I'd have to go 20-25 minutes east or west to see any sort of health care.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

?? They just need their votes, they’re not doing anything for them - they’re poors! Besides it runs itself now, they don’t have to, y’know, care.

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

People who have zero idea about policy tend to vote republican simply because their family/friends tell them to. My cousin is a tacit maga member of the lbgt community. Occasionally she'll ask me about political stuff, and I'll send her an article that explains it better than I can, and promptly not fucking read it.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah, well not reading is a core tenet. That’s why they have so many podcasters and youtubers to explain everything to them.

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm not generally one to blame the voters because Donald lied to them about everything except immigration, but he spent his entire first administration trying to cut their health care, so it is a little dumb that they voted for a second helping.

I hope they enjoyed the articles about his kickass Halloween party.

[–] Rothe@piefed.social 3 points 2 weeks ago

You really should start to blame the voters more though. They believe his lies because he tickles their bigotry with it. They are hateful people voting for this shit because they hope he hurts people.

[–] Apathy@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago

Who could have seen this coming /s
