Did you do sand buggy or sand surfing?

[–] Quilotoa@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

Yeah. It was pretty cool. The sand surfing was a lot like tobaganning.

What happens when the wind blows hard

They must have to do so much sweeping.

It didn't seem like much of a problem at the hostel. There weren't really strong winds which for sure helps.

I mean, I guess thats an oasis, but it looks only 1.5km from town anyway?

[–] Quilotoa@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

Yes. Huacachina is actually just on the edge of the dune desert.

Great picture!

Where's even weirder is the single dune in the middle of a green landscape 😳

[–] Quilotoa@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago

Yeah. I climbed one of the dunes beside the oasis and could see it. Basically sitting in the the middle of the town of Ica.

Huh, I was just reading the Wikipedia page for this! I was suddenly wondering of oases were a real thing 😅

They're very real! Their hit song "Wonderwall" is a classic since its release.

It's very cool. They do dune buggy and sandboarding there, it's a great time.

The actual lake is very pretty.

[–] Quilotoa@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 days ago

Yeah, I wouldn't drink from it though. It looked pretty scuzzy.

I want to know how they built that water tank on the sand dune. Is there bedrock not too far down?

[–] Quilotoa@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

Good question. Those sand dunes are higher than they look. Some are 500 meters high.
