World News
A community for discussing events around the World
Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
- Blogsites are treated in the same manner as social media sites. Medium, Blogger, Substack, etc. are not valid news links regardless of who is posting them. Yes, legitimate news sites use Blogging platforms, they also use Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube and we don't allow those links either.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF OCTOBER 19 2025
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

What have they actually got to lose in doing so?
The US has threatened sanctions if they do.
It's Monday. The US threatens sanctions every Monday.
And on every day that ends with a y.
Most government PR run on major socmed platform due to the amount of reach the platform have, so if they have to ban X they have to migrate themselves and their citizen first. Banning X today could actually cost them next election, and they're actually getting unpopular. Elon know this, that's why they don't think they need to change anything because it's mostly just bark.
Or at least that's what i thought, would love them to prove me wrong.
They could ban grok and fine Twitter.
Of course they can, but the topic on hand is "what would they lose if they ban X".
Ah, ok. You haven’t read the article. They risk losing an election, as they use social media for self promotion and messaging. If theban twitter, they risk other being able to take their lead and they only have a small margin.
Bribes.
Betteridge’s law of headlines: no.
Hopefully.
If it's because of grok, isn't it easier to just ban grok instead of X? Malaysia and Indonesia did just that because X just shrug at their request of doing something, which they basically told both country to just rely on user report.
It would be a total net positive. If only it could be banned everywhere.
Not a chance. The UK already surrendered to tech. The mastorbaitorbase and age checks just gave or will give tech everyone's face and likeness and put together with everything said or done or looked at to parse with ai threat detection and catalogue how much you love israel first but everthing else second, because politicians and oligarchs and swells on video fucking children with epstein from the uk and us it's always israel first.
The UK gets a copy of the data tech is taking from everyone basically, they surrendered their citizens to tech, and hired palantir and their ilk to make social scores to be secretly used against everyone.
But it's "our" side so we are cool with it. Cancel jury trials why you are at it, the right to protest, defenses against protest that can win even as they charge decades in prison for protest related crimes. Israel, climate, environmental now, anything disfavored coming. Now politicians unilaterally declaring terrorist groups based on bad faith information. Then capriciously equating protest of a subject with the proscribed group to make them supporting terrorism even if they didn't mention that group.
This labor government has done more damage in a few years than the conservatives did in all of theirs. Corbyn fucked up not purging the establishment, and allowing them to keep the party enforcement mechanism. They purged the actual left under bad faith patently false allegations, became unpopular, and just waited to get in for not being the other guy.
Meanwhile the far right is the only ones running a reform ticked, under the reform party. They will get in because labor and the tories eat bags of oligarchic dick, then with the US and Russia put a fix in, and then take more liberty than any despite getting elected railing against that liberty being cancelled, labor cancelling the magna carta and the liberty of the enlightenment.
I wonder why this platform with Nazi filter bubble and CP capabilities is still available in my country when my Apple ID was banned forever for no reason. Something billionaire I guess.
MBFC is a load of horse shit.

Versus Wikipedia:
Politico (stylized in all caps), known originally as The Politico, is an American political digital newspaper company founded by American banker and media executive Robert Allbritton in 2007.[4]
In 2021, Politico was reportedly acquired for over $1 billion by Axel Springer SE, a German news publisher and media company.[6] Axel Springer SE's CEO Mathias Dopfner said that Politico employees would be required to adhere to the company's principles of support for Israel's right to exist, support for a United Europe and a free-market economy.[7]
In 2024, Politico was handed leaked confidential materials from the Donald Trump presidential campaign. Politico confirmed that the documents were authentic but refused to report on their contents. The Associated Press wrote that the decision by Politico to not report on the Trump campaign leaks stands "in marked contrast" to Politico's extensive reporting on the leaked email communications of Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign manager, John Podesta.[110]
An investigation by The Intercept, The Nation, and DeSmog found that Politico is one of the leading media outlets that publishes advertising for the fossil fuel industry while failing to adequately distinguish between independent journalism and native advertising.[111] Journalists who cover climate change for Politico are concerned that conflicts of interest with the companies and industries that cause climate change, obstruct action, and engage in greenwashing through sponsored content will reduce the credibility of their reporting on climate change and cause readers to be misinformed.[111]

Axel Springer SE (German: [ˈaksl̩ ˈʃpʁɪŋɐ ɛsˈeː]) is a European multinational mass and online media company, based in Berlin, Germany.
with numerous multimedia news brands, such as Bild, Die Welt, Fakt, and the US political news site Politico, which Axel Springer acquired in 2021.[5]
The company generated total revenues of about €3.93 billion and an EBITDA increase of 12.8% in the first half of 2023.[6][7] Following US private-equity firm KKR's majority-stake acquisition in 2020, Axel Springer’s revenues have increased by a total of approximately €1 billion.[8][9][10] The company, including its subsidiaries, joint ventures, and licenses, operates in more than 40 countries.
In the United States, Axel Springer is ranked among the top four digital publishers, alongside USA Today, News Corp, and The New York Times.[6]
Gudrun Kruip, a scholar associated with the Stiftung Bundespräsident-Theodor-Heuss-Haus, has claimed that Axel Springer SE, along with its subsidiaries, exhibits a pro-American stance, often omitting criticism of US foreign policy.[60] This observation is then backed by allegations made by two former CIA officers in an interview with The Nation, claiming that Axel Springer received $7 million from the CIA.[61] The purpose of this funding, they allege, was to influence the publisher to align its editorial content with American geopolitical interests.[61] Although no conclusive evidence has come to light, Springer's admission in his autobiography regarding the financial challenges faced at the outset of his publishing venture, suggesting the necessity of external funding for the company's rapid growth led Kruip to believe that the allegations of CIA financial support are credible.[60] As of 2001, the Axel Springer SE names "solidarity with the libertarian values of the United States of America" as one of its core principles on its website.[62] This explicit stance has led to critiques from scholars and independent observers regarding the company's perceived alignment with American interests.[60][63][64][65][66] Furthermore, an article in Foreign Policy has critiqued Axel Springer SE for a history of compromising journalistic ethics to support right-wing causes, implying a longstanding pattern of bias in its publications.[67]
