Note: Not my screenshot

It's been over 7 years since the game was announced, and after being cancelled by Riot and bought back by the original devs, against all odds it is FINALLY playable!

The game was supposed to come out in an hour but it seems the devs released it early. I'll wait and see some early gameplay but it looks like I might buy it on launch day. Feels surreal that the wait is finally over.

After so many years of development drama and criticism surrounding Hypixel themselves even before they actively worked on this… I think I‘m good. Playable doesn‘t mean you will get the full experience for a one time payment. Hypixel live and breathe live service.

[–] termaxima@slrpnk.net 3 points 4 hours ago

I've been looking at it from afar and it's nice to see some people trying to innovate upon the Minecraft formula ; though in this case I think the Hypixel people and I enjoy different things about Minecraft.

I fear that early access will kill this. Sure it will provide some money that might pay for the rest of the development, but streamers will play it now - der that it is literally work in progress in vast parts and maybe take another look once it finally releases, but the hype will be gone at the release.

[–] MrScottyTay@sh.itjust.works 7 points 4 hours ago

For this game it was either this or the game never released at all though

[–] BuckWylde@lemmy.world 38 points 18 hours ago (4 children)

Back in my day games were finished before they were released.

[–] Electricd@lemmybefree.net 3 points 1 hour ago

And they were a lot simpler, and there was a lot less competition. Nowadays, games are everywhere and hype doesn’t last long. No hype, less sales, even though the game is great and released in the final version

A little ironic to post this on a game inspired by Minecraft, the most prolific example of an early access model working out.

[–] EarMaster@lemmy.world 5 points 13 hours ago (2 children)

But Minecraft - even in the Beta days - worked as a complete game. They have been improving (depending on how you like the changes) on it since, but it wasn't ever filled with literal work in progress signs like Hytale is…

[–] southernwolf@pawb.social 5 points 6 hours ago

Yes, but Minecraft was on sale for a year before it ever went into "Beta," back before it was in Alpha even. In fact, it wasn't until one of the last Alpha updates that the earliest semblance of "Minecraft" as we know it really began to appear. The Beta updates added a lot of core features we take for granted in the game, like beds for sleeping, tall grass for seeds, redstone repeaters, pistons, sprinting, hunger, etc.

The first purchasable version of Minecraft I remember didn't even have a working health bar.

Notch sold the game to Microsoft long before it was ever a complete game. Why program something when you can sell players on an idea and then sell that idea to Microsoft?

[–] WolfLink@sh.itjust.works 8 points 6 hours ago

Notch sold the game to Microsoft long before it was ever a complete game.

I know it’s a bit fuzzy with Minecraft since it’s constantly getting updates, but I find the claim that Minecraft was “incomplete” before selling it to Microsoft is a big stretch.

Version “1.0” came out 3 years before the Microsoft sale, and at least to me, the game felt “complete” long before 1.0

They still haven't delivered on the finite water promise.

[–] EncryptKeeper@lemmy.world 11 points 16 hours ago

From what I’ve gleaned from the history of this project, the original creator of the game sold the IP to a publisher in order to secure money and resources for further development, where they promptly started interfering with development to the point that it was delayed and ultimately cancelled.

The creator bought the rights back from them and released it into Early Access so that they can fund its development.

I personally have nothing against early access games after playing other EA games like Factorio, Rimworld, and Satisfactory that were known for being incredible experiences long before they launched into 1.0.

This is one of the few times I'm ok with a game releasing early. It was in Dev hell for a long ass time only to get nearly canned until it was reacquired. If it can get the support it needs to achieve the dev's vision, I'm ok with that.

And they have made it extremely clear what kind of state the game is in.

[–] mr_noxx@lemmy.ml 41 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (1 children)

Just bought it without any problems and fired it up. I like that two-factor authentication is the default. The game runs quite well on my Linux Mint desktop, with really no problems at all so far. Of course, this is Early Access, so I'm sure there will be plenty of bugs here and there. But so far, it's a good experience and I'm having fun with it! :)

[–] Wolfram@lemmy.world 9 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

Good to know it works well in Linux! I was afraid after Riot acquired the game that it wouldnt get a native Linux port or have extra hoops to run through Proton.

[–] G0ldenSp00n@lemmy.jacaranda.club 22 points 16 hours ago

Riot actually cancelled this game and then the original creator bought back the rights, so Riot isn't even involved anymore. Which is good news in my books.

Flatpak for the win. :)

Not on steam, not on my radar.

[–] Electricd@lemmybefree.net 1 points 1 hour ago

"Not on the proprietary platform owned by the stake.com of videogames? Won’t play then."

[–] winkerjadams@lemmy.dbzer0.com 18 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

I love steam as much as the next guy but monopolies are bad and we should support other businesses when we can. When Gabe dies who knows what happens to all the steam games you "own"

[–] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 2 points 3 hours ago

Agree to that, bought games like Factorio and Vintage Story straight from the developer instead of through steam. It does help when the game natively supports Linux, if it doesn't then yeah Steam it is.

My grocery store is a monopoly, the products in it aren't.

I don't want to shop at 1000 different stores that will all sell my information to brokers. If you do, that's fine, shopping around gets cheaper prices but you pay with your time.

I'll keep shopping at the one store.

[–] perniczech@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Does your grocery store sell licenses for the products you buy? I don't think the grocery store can take away the food you buy there if they simply decide to do so.

[–] ms_lane@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

All the more reason to choose a 'grocer' you trust rather than a fly-by-night online store.

Not on any other platform than W11

[–] gegil@sopuli.xyz 11 points 18 hours ago

I might play this game, but only months or even year later. Its too hyped right now, and i want to see if it will actually be good after some time.

[–] loutr@sh.itjust.works 10 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

What kind of game is it? Is it like Minecraft/roblox as the screenshot suggests?

[–] CosmoNova@lemmy.world 3 points 4 hours ago

I would guess it‘s probably closer to Roblox or modern Minecraft. Hypixel started the project to have a constant money flow so expect monetization left and right.

[–] popcar2@piefed.ca 10 points 17 hours ago

It's basically Minecraft but with a bigger focus on RPG elements, exploration, and combat. It's a safe bet that if you like MC you'll enjoy this.

[–] Chee_Koala@lemmy.world 23 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

I'm excited, I don't know a lot about it but I think the voxel survival genre has a lot of room for new ideas. Let's see if they hit any good ones!

[–] Goodeye8@piefed.social 7 points 14 hours ago

I wouldn't be excited. The reason Hytale exists in the first place is because Mojang blocked server microtransactions which effectively killed the income of the Hypixel server. They're also planning paid mods, paid cosmetics and minigame MTX (whatever the fuck that means). I think there's a legitimate concern that the game is going to end up heavily monetized and it's going to turn into a meta-game platform like Roblox.

But if your want to be excited about Minecraft "clones" there are other choices. If you're looking for something more action related there's Allumeria which is aiming to be like a 3D Terraria. It's not out yet but there's early access planned for 2026. And if you're looking for more a more survival experience there's Vintage Story. I will 100% recommend Vintage Story to anyone wanting an actual survival game and not just survival elements that turn into mindless busywork 1 hour into the game. There's so much work that goes into almost everything you do in Vintage Story but you'll feel so rewarded for putting in the effort. You can spend a whole year in game and every in game day have a goal for the day.

If they fixed their damn payment processor I’d buy it. I’ve tried several methods and they all fail.

Tebux or whatever the fuck it’s called charged me FIVE TIMES before letting the payment through, I’ve filed a complaint with them because holy scam, but I’m hoping the charges will just go away, since they’re still pending

[–] popcar2@piefed.ca 4 points 21 hours ago

Worked for me just now.
