USB -> Serial -> Parallel -> Serial -> Serial (25 pin -> 9 pin) -> PS2 -> Serial (??? not sure) -> USB

Or in short USPSSPSSU adapter. Nice.

[–] thatKamGuy@sh.itjust.works 20 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Not sure if you’re naming an adapter, or badly trying to coerce a cat to come closer.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 month ago

Por que no los dos? 🤷

[–] Verat@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

PS2 -> serial seems correct, iirc their were serial mice.

[–] db2@lemmy.world 27 points 1 month ago (3 children)

What's the transfer rate on that monstrosity?

[–] capuccino@lemmy.world 44 points 1 month ago (2 children)

0 since it's connected to a PS/2.

[–] thisbenzingring@lemmy.today 11 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

that green part is a ps2 to usb keyboard adapter that Microsoft provided with their keyboards at the time

edit: dang, replied to the wrong comment. meant for it to be the @db2@lemmy.world

[–] db2@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I still have 2 of those 🤣 it was a joke

Edit: 2 adapters, 1 PS/2 (Model 80 tower), 0 Toughbooks

[–] db2@lemmy.world -1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That's not a PS/2, those didn't come in laptop form. Maybe a Toughbook.

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

PS/2 refers to both a type of IBM PC, and a type of port.

[–] db2@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Did they make a PS/2 without that port?

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I dunno about that, but the port was popular in all types of machines in the late '90s and early '00s

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 2 points 1 month ago

And it's still superior to USB for keyboards.

It wouldn't work, at all.

You've got USB to db9 serial, to db25 female, back down to db9 serial. At this point, since the chain started life as a USB to serial adapter, this should be a functional serial port.

But then, it gets converted to PS/2 mouse. Then to AT keyboard, then back to PS/2 mouse, before becoming a USB port again.

That's not how it works.

You see, he should have just plugged the dongle directly into the usb port on the laptop.

[–] db2@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

So you're saying it's now gigabit Ethernet.

[–] wabasso@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Do any of these adapters actually do any signal processing / transformation? I always assumed they were simply wiring crossovers. But I guess when the number of pins change there has to be an IC in there somewhere?

[–] db2@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That first USB to db9 cable does something, the rest are glorified jumpers.

[–] wabasso@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago

Yeah so now I’m wondering if jumpers stand a better chance of making this work, accidentally. If I had more time I’d look up all the specs and see where the wire maze lands!

[–] Davel23@fedia.io 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's DE9, just because my mind won't let it go.

[–] funkajunk@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Elite ball knowledge.

[–] b_tr3e@feddit.org 1 points 1 month ago

Don't be rude. He just forgot the USB serial interface.

[–] ranzispa@mander.xyz 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Is that a USB to USB adapter?

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

0% chance this works at all.

[–] JelleWho@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

This should maybe have been listed on https://moeilijklastig.nl/verloopjes/

[–] 666dollarfootlong@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Would anything work, even a keyboard or a mouse?
