Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today/ . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

Yeah ok I assume French people being really into cigarettes is just an outdated stereotype anyways

23.1% of the French population smokes daily

What the fuck.

yeesh, wonder what the cancer rates are like

[–] Mantikora@hexbear.net 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I only know non smokers who died of the lung cancer. When we smoke for a long time, our doctors say quitting is lethal. I shit you not. My uncle smoked 3 packs a day and doctor told him stopping would kill him. Dude died holding his hand like he holds a cigarette.

shit, I wonder what the COPD rates are like.

europeans smoke a lot in general, even younger euros like under 15 ones. There was like a short period where it was not trendy anymore and people started switching to vapes or quit smoking all together, but cigarettes came back into fashion again.

[–] Gosplan14_the_Third@hexbear.net 17 points 1 week ago (1 children)

And that's not even the highest numbers in Europe. You want some heavy smokers? Look at Eastern Europe.

Honestly, every time I step out of my rural house I’m over come by a wave of cigarette smoke…I can’t even see.

[–] MolotovHalfEmpty@hexbear.net 58 points 1 week ago

Damn, now you're going to have to have multiple affairs just to have places to light up throughout the day.

There will be riots. Depriving a F*ench of their cigarettes is like depriving a fish of its water.

[–] Nakoichi@hexbear.net 30 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Isn't the word cigarette french?

[–] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 31 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Might as well be, they earned it.

[–] Sinisterium@hexbear.net 21 points 1 week ago (1 children)

“-ette” is french and is used to indicate smaller than the normal. A cigarette is a smaller cigar. “-chen” is used in a similar context in german for example.

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 12 points 1 week ago

The suffix ette implies feminity which then extends to the sixe thing. Cause girls couldn't handle cigars they made cigarettes and then cigarettes were what was shipped in your rations in ww1 and 2 and then that's what dudes smoked too.

[–] Fishroot@hexbear.net 12 points 1 week ago

They should ban grooming in university, number of people failing their degree will skyrocket

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 45 points 1 week ago

Making 23% of the population grumpy as fuck from no nicotine hit might make some crazy shit happen

[–] Rey_McSriff@hexbear.net 42 points 1 week ago

I remember being in Spain shortly after they banned smoking indoors. I was in a bar with friends, where people were still smoking, when a couple of cops walk in. There was a tense moment before both cops pulled out cigarettes and started smoking inside too, lmao

[–] Grownbravy@hexbear.net 37 points 1 week ago

how will the french national identity survive?

[–] ElChapoDeChapo@hexbear.net 37 points 1 week ago

[–] ButtBidet@hexbear.net 32 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I don't live in France. But Jesus fucking Christ I hate people deciding it's OK to light one up next to me in a queue or outdoor seating.

[–] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 11 points 1 week ago

tbh, it's wild to me that people still smoke at all in the covid era, let alone in public and around other people.

[–] TheVelvetGentleman@hexbear.net 29 points 1 week ago

This happened in my town the same day weed got legalized and the cops put out a statement to the press that they couldn't and won't enforce it. I smoke so I like the a ility to do so and if cars are allowed outside then I don't see why smoking shouldn't be.

[–] Xavienth@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)
[–] Alisu@hexbear.net 8 points 1 week ago

Cars are only allowed inside an enclosed garage now

[–] Civility@hexbear.net 15 points 1 week ago (1 children)

[–] grym@hexbear.net 8 points 1 week ago

This is basically aimed at preventing second hand smoking for children, so its public places where children tend to be.

Good honestly

[–] kristina@hexbear.net 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Based. Paris must smell of weed

[–] boiledfrog@hexbear.net 6 points 1 week ago

France has pretty harsh laws against cannabis and macron is such a boomer that he won't do anything about it except show propganda of "WEED KILLS BABIES WITH FIRE" (can't find the video in question rn but it was very cringe)

[–] mayo_cider@hexbear.net 5 points 1 week ago
