I used to call a zebra a “pajama horse” and squirrel monkeys “fireplace monkeys”.
How do I remember this? Because my mom still likes to bring this up, every single chance she gets 🤦♀️

I have one from SMB as well: calling koopa troopas "duckturtles".
So many people called Koopas ducks. I don't understand why.
Their turtle beak kinda looks like a duckbill in shitty NES graphics :P
Yo. Me too.
Boos from New Super Mario Bros Wii. I called them "air ghost" because they couldn't be hurt by fire nor ice.
Still my favorite Mario enemy. My aunt bought me a plush of it from Japan.

My kids used to call the play place with all of the inflatable bounce houses "the bouncy store".
My eldest couldn't remember the name for bagpipes and called them "autotuned hornbags" which is one of my favorites, and I still use it.
In relation to mario kart, we had no idea what the superhorn was called, we always called in "The Honkerbanger". Likewise we didn't understand what the drafting sprites were in MK on the wii, it looked like the person in front of you was sweating big droplets of water. We'd say we were "getting sweat".
