I returned to migrating my library away from Mangadex (I was lazy and took a break as doing so on a phone is a pain), while doing so I realised that some of the series I've moved over before stopped being updated on the new site and had to transfer them again. A bit annoying but thanks to that I found there were new chapters to catch up on and did just that. Other than that I'm still on the same binge as last week this time.

I Shall Master This Family
I caught up with all the available chapters and I can safely say I love this series. It's engaging, has great art (and outfits!) and is simply a joy to read. It's actually kind of bad because I ended up binging it too eagerly (as in, to the point of losing on sleep). Good thing I'll have to wait for the updates now, I guess?

Random thoughts:

  • I hate the extravagant displays of wealth. This isn't a problem with the series specifically (it obviously fits the story) but rather a general sentiment I have towards such things.
  • So many sweet and emotional moments, I love it!
  • Lorraine is precious and has to be protected at all cost.
  • I feel sorry for Ramona, getting NTR'd by a higher power sucks.
  • I'm not a fan of the magical elements in the story and think they don't bring anything of value to the series. Thankfully they are extremely rare and don't add much (except for 2 or so events) but that only makes me feel they could've been removed without losing anything.

Spoiler thoughtsI don't really like Perez x Tia pairing - not because I don't like either of them or think they don't have chemistry but rather... it just doesn't feel like an equal relationship. Perez feels too emotionally dependent on Tia due to all that happened between them. Besides, Ramona losing her fated love interest is just sad.
I hope Tia can stick to her plan on that one.

Chokki-chan has her priorities straight.

Really cute chapter. I wish we got more Yura-chan, both today and in general - I need that gal culture presentation.

Her drive and care for other characters is truly moving, autocorrect knows what's up!

Desktop reader talkI took the time to set up and try out Suwayomi since last week. As expected, I don't really like having to use a browser to use it but it's alright otherwise. It does have a problem with detecting that my system is using dark theme and ends up launching with bright colours every time but that's not a huge problem.

Komikku is working fine as well. This one's problem has to do with the way it searches through source sites - you can't cancel a call for sites it's still waiting for response from, even if you found what you were looking for. So if for example I add a new series to library and want to look for something new while the previous search didn't finish (calls to some sites can get stuck without response) I have to restart the app to do so.
This also isn't a huge issue (it's relevant mainly when importing my library during an initial setup) but it's a stupid nonetheless.

Manga talk

The One Within the Villainess
I binged through the series last week. Despite having the same potential issue as May I Ask for One Last Thing?, i.e. completely overpowered MC, this one ended up having more going on for it in the end. Some examples that differentiate both titles:

  • MC doesn't solve every single problem by beating people up. She actually does some investigative work, creates a prosperous village and wins people over with various actions.
  • MC starts from a degraded position after the "prologue" section of the story. I won't pretend she goes from zero to hero throughout the series but she is cast aside with no one on her side when things go down. She's still OP and starts with a piece of land though.
  • She gets to act like a real villainess. She works from the shadows and in a way that no one suspects her, she can be cold, manipulative and ruthless to those who crossed her.
  • ... there was more but I forgot... more surprises for those who decide to read, I guess?

Funnily enough, anime adaptation was announced a few days after I finished the series - perfect timing.

Side Characters Deserve Love Too
I did not expect MC to be a simp, let alone such a huge one. Her obsession ranges from hilarious to tiring, with the former being the more common occurrence thankfully. While the series can be a bit one note at times it's still pretty fun to binge, if only to have something to do.

Late season 1/season 2 thoughtsWhile Joe was always kind of a Mary Sue character she still had to work within limitations early on, however small they were. When the war arc started I thought it had a lot of potential for some interesting story beats. That lasted up until the middle of the first battle chapter when our MC with no combat experience and very limited training quickly became the god of death and any tension just evaporated immediately.

Like... it's not like I wanted the series to suddenly change genres but man, can't you keep the suspense for at least a moment?

At least the final arc delivered pretty nicely. It had suspense, stakes, drama - pretty much everything I was missing from the rest of the story. It also got a bit darker compared to everything before it without go overboard.

In the end I did end up enjoying it quite a bit. I do have to say though: Benji > Kyle. I know he had no chance but I still prefer the side character to the side character. Especially considering how Kyle turned out to be in the end (not terrible, just not how I enjoyed him).

I Shall Master This Family
Woman gets thrown out of a noble family after everyone who had some respect or ties to her is gone, then she dies and is resurrected as her 7 year old self. Objective: take over the family.

Really solid so far, both in humour and writing in general. I appreciate that MC acts like a kid while working on her long term plans to improve her (and her dad's) standing in the family. While the presentation is light and fun for the most part, story doesn't shy from more serious topics like political manoeuvring, child abuse or bullying.

It's my next binge target for sure.

Seems like most people prefer cases based on what I see around me. Personally I don't like the additional bulk plus I'm careful enough with handheld objects to not drop them. Haven't destroyed any phone so far.

I still think the act itself is pretty gross but yeah, the harm is the important part for me - and I don't mean that just in case of sexual images. It's also a problem in terms of content created to affect people's reputation in other ways or influence the sociopolitical situation (something that's already happening around the world).

The harmful potential of generative AI is on a completely different scale than photoshopped images already mentioned in this thread by others. That doesn't mean genAI can't be used in fun and interesting ways but stuff like what's described in the linked article is a big no no for me.

In my opinion absolutely. Whatever happens in your head stays in your head and doesn't affect the other person unless you take active steps for that to happen. Images or videos on the other hand can not only be distributed far easier, even accidentally, but also have a way higher chance of affecting people's lives (how can you disprove you didn't take nude photos of yourself for example? let alone make people believe it). They can lead to loss of reputation, harassment, bullying and serious mental issues for the victims (trust issues, anxiety, depression, self-harm) - imagination can't really do that on its own.

Perhaps distribution is the real problem but easy access to tools that can create convincing results quickly and without effort makes said distribution way more probable.

Nice! Just binged through the manga a few days ago and would love to see this animated. What a perfect coincidence.

Photoshop requires at least some skill and doesn't allow for mass production of fakes the way generative AI does. Same problem, different scale.
