I also learned that whole idea of German inherently being a harsh language is bs, it's basically just cultural associations and actors deliberately talking harshly.

To be fair, the US has had concentration camps for hundreds of years (starting in the 1830s for holding natives)

Fatherland is still used in many countries/languages, hell even polish uses "Ojczyzna".
