Rarely drink tea, but when I do I don't add anything.

My coffee I like with oat milk (just like the taste more than with regular milk).

WHAT! I love my bialetti.. Thankfully it will probably last me forever and the little sealing part I can get from other brands I guess.

Will do! :)

I don't have anything to do add right now, but a fix suggestion:

"Community feed Buy European@feedit.uk" -> there's a typo in "feddit".

Was supposed to write that earlier but forgot sorry!

Nice resource!

I have to say I really like the idea of TLDR page. This is my first time bumping into a website that has a dedicated TLDR.

Pretty cool! I love that lemmy is quite visible on your page and that you link to !GoHugEU@lemm.ee on your about page.

I've often tried to link newjoiners some of our older posts where we had some really good discussion going on here in this community but have trouble finding them. Might use gohug to find links, thanks :)

Edit: wording

I've tried to participate in so many giveaways and lotteries and never won anything. I believe that's my superpower: lose against the odds.

Uh oh.. Forgot about that! Please don't tell Secreta Secretorum officials!!

Sadly not yet at least. Have to do this in the lemmy web-UI of your instance or another app like Thunder :(

Hopefully we get in Voyager!

Just wanted to comment that am on Version 2.28.0 on android and I don't have this issue.

Only thing that comes to mind is that last time I saw someone have similar issue was because they had accidentally deselected "english" or "undetermined" language settings in their profile on lemmy's default web UI.

Might want to try checking those settings out, don't remember how the other person had accidentally deselected languages but they were just as surprised.

Yeah that was an awesome update! It also runs way smoother on linux than on windows - noticed this when I made the switch.

And it speaks for it's software that it can be used for document editing! (yeah not always the right tool but still)

Hallo!

So I thought that maybe we have people here who can help me with this:

I'm having a lot of trouble understanding when to use Dativ vs Akkusativ in German. I understand that specific prepositions require specific cases, but in general I often find myself applying the wrong case in a sentence.

In some sentences it is quite clear:

Ich habe den Stift gekauft. (Pen being the direct object that is being bought)

But there are cases like this:

Ich schlafe in meinem auto in meiner pause (I know the order is wrong, but the cases seem to stay as they are even if you change the order)

Here I would have thought that the car is the direct object. I struggle with this a lot and often apply akkusativ case wrongly.

I would appreciate if someone could help me with understanding this better. For example: Why is the car not the direct object in the above example?

(I've posted this before, but there is an influx of new users and this community allows reposts older than one month)

Come make a silly request or participate by drawing! Or both!

Prerequisites to participate: none.

Eutelsat said it was in talks with European governments about providing additional satellite connectivity in Ukraine, as investors bet that the French satellite operator could replace Elon Musk’s Starlink in the country.

Eutelsat, the owner of OneWeb, a rival to Starlink, said on Tuesday that it was “actively collaborating with European institutions and business partners”, adding that it had equipment that could be “deployed swiftly in Ukraine to connect the most critical missions and infrastructures”.

Ukraine has relied heavily on Starlink for its military campaigns as it has played a critical role in improving its communications on the battlefield, but there are fears this could be under threat after the US suspended military aid to Kyiv on Monday.

[...]

Eutelsat said its talks with European governments were focused on using a combination of its satellite constellations — OneWeb at about 1,200km above the earth and the Geo satellites at 35,000km — to strengthen satellite connectivity in Ukraine and the Black Sea region.

Both are capable of providing connectivity for Ukrainian drones, which have inflicted serious damage on Russian forces. Some military experts believe any large concentration of Russian troops or tanks would be decimated by Ukrainian drone attacks.

[...] The EU on Tuesday proposed a package of €150bn in loans to capitals for defence procurement. Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, said the move could facilitate “immediate military equipment for Ukraine”.

Eutelsat said that “the timing [of deploying additional user terminals for critical missions and infrastructure] depends on procurement decisions by European member states and the necessary infrastructure co-ordination”.

I found out about languagedrops in this post: https://sopuli.xyz/post/23380411

And was wondering if it's any good?

I personally feel like I understand German-speaking people better the more I study the language.

E.g. my experience was that they are generally good listeners because their language has a sentence structure which forces the listener to wait for the most important information at the end of a sentence.

Bad Denglish to demonstrate:

"I have yesterday night... at the football field.... together with friends ... (dude get to the point) had a beer"

StreetComplete makes contributing to OpenStreetMap easy and fun by turning contributions into "quests" on a map for you to complete. No personal information is required, just create an OpenStreetMap account, and start contributing directly in your area!

I tried this out myself, and it is truly fantastic! I had never heard of it, and I'm sure many of you haven't either, so spread the word!

Tip: When entering buildings to ask questions (opening hours, etc.) be ready to explain what OpenStreetMap is :)

Sadly there is no browser view, but they have selection of app stores on their page for the app (and IIRC they are working on a desktop version).

It has routing, searching, more map details (e.g. park benches, trash bins on the map), OSM editing, and pretty slick look in my opinion.

I recently switched to Organic Maps after learning about it here on Lemmy and haven't touched Google Maps as much. I know it is not a perfect 100% replacement, but while it lacks certain things (e.g. public transport, but I use local public transport app anyway for better accuracy), it has so many features google lacks:

  • hiking trail overlay that is more up-to-date
  • stores maps on your phone in vector format (offline use is so much nicer)
  • privacy focused

There is more to this than I know and write here, and probably many here already know about Organic Maps since there was the whole fiasco of google removing this app from play store awhile back, but thought it's cool that the company behind it is in Estonia (man I still remember Skype, thanks Estonia ❤️ I've spent so much time on skype before it was aquired by Microsoft).

Edit to add extra info from website: Company is based in Tallinn, Estonia - Organic Maps OÜ

Any experiences? At home or abroad.

My recent experience:

Tried to talk to someone and it was going well until they said 2 sentences really fast and I had no clue what they said.

I must've looked confused, trying to mutter something, ANYTHING! What were the words I'm supposed to say?! I forgot the polite "sorry, could you repeat that" in every language I know.

They caught me off guard, damn it. Then came the killing blow: "English?".

In my moment of weakness I submitted and gave them a nod. From there on we were talking as equals, but my pride had taken a hit. I was defeated. I must go back to my books and duolingo and hide until I have courage again.

(Sorry for the dramatic text, wanted to make a boring interaction sound bit more interesting)
