Not everyone hates their family, Reid.

This is awesome!!

I'm in Canada, but support as many EU brands as I can. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to replace Garmin products down the road, and this website listed SIGMA as an alternative - made in Germany bike computers (and more)! I can't wait to explore this list further!

It's crazy how much space 17 cars need!

Oof. Correcting that now! 😵

Fair enough. I still don't think that being open about their self-hosted option would hurt them.

You implied that it would hurt business, and that really doesn't seem to be the case for other projects using a self-hosted/subscription business model.

If you meant something else, then I guess I misunderstood. No harm, no foul.

Jesus Christ, I was reading it as "Führerwear" 🫢 But "Feuer" means "fire" in German, so it's totally appropriate!

I'm loving the repurposing of fire hoses.

Has that killed Bitwarden yet? There are many self-hosted projects that also have paid options.

I'd be happy with a paid (one-time fee) license for a self-hosted option with any software. Subscriptions should only be paying for data/storage, and if that's offloaded to the customer's local hardware, there's no need to keep them on a subscription.

Especially for a product that's privacy-first, that really should include a self-hosted option (paid or otherwise).

Looks like a voter map. They get what they voted for 🤭

We've started putting NO RIGHT ON RED signs at intersections, and motorists are still running over pedestrians!

You can't design away stupidity. The danger is people behind the wheel of these aerodynamic tanks.

I don't mean to talk negatively at all, and their product looks amazing (especially with the added context you've provided).

For me, based on my own experience and the huge amount of storage needed to keep my photos/videos safe, it's not cost-effective for me personally. If the choice was any of the other paid services or Ente, I think Ente would be the clear winner from the sound of it.

Like with all other online services, it's cheap until your collection grows. I basically outpaced Google Drive (at the time), and it would have been significantly more expensive to continue with their paid plans. So, I invested in hardware. LOL

But realistically, if you have a smaller photo/video collection, then I think it would be just as easy to spend $5-10 a month and forget about it. I was working with decades worth of images, so I would quickly outgrow any 1, 2, 3TB plans.

I keep seeing this in edits, but where can you view this "Lyft-owned street-level imagery"??

Even searching for it comes up with nothing.

UPDATE: Thank you guys for all the suggestions! I got Navidrome installed on my NAS in a matter of minutes, got to test like a half dozen Subsonic compatible apps (both FOSS and Play Store), and it looks like Symfonium + Navidrome meets my needs. I'll keep testing before my free trial for Symfonium ends, but I really appreciate the nudge to try a new music server!

I'm self-hosting my music collection (synology NAS), and while I've liked Poweramp, it only reads local music files, which means I have to copy many GB of music to my phone, even if I'm not particularly listening to it.

The Synology DS Audio app actually does what I want: it caches music locally as you're streaming it, but it reads directly from the NAS.

The only problem with DS Audio is that it sucks as an actual music player.

Are there any Android music players, preferably FOSS or at least privacy-friendly, that will read from the NAS and cache in an intelligent way but also works well as an actual music player?

I did try Symfonium, but couldn't get it to work with Webdav or SMB, plus the dev comes off as a real asshole, so I'd rather not give them money.

EDIT: To clarify what I'm looking for:

  • The app must be able to connect to my NAS music collection (through my local network is fine).
  • Most importantly, the app must be able to cache my music either as I'm streaming it, or in advance when I'm running through a playlist... then future plays of the song should be from the cache.
  • I do NOT want to have to manually download or sync files, which is how I've been doing, and I don't like this at all.

If you've used the Synology DS Audio app, then you'll know exactly the behaviour I'm looking for. It really is a shame that DS Audio sucks as a music player, or else it would be exactly what I'm looking for.

Marketing should always be OPT-IN by default, but these extra steps to opt out is truly asshole design.

Oh, and on the opt-out confirmation screen, you get two options: Yes or No. The button colour for "yes" is white, and the “no” button matches the “save” button on the previous screen, so it's easy to accidentally cancel the opt-out. Double-asshole design!
