ETA: its also a massive pain in the ass that most people don't do at best. And some groups are having a harder and harder time getting one.

If a passport is accessible to you, get one, they're great and practical. But in the US voter ID is a voter suppression tactic. Personally I would much prefer a universal "citizen/permanent resident ID" that's free, easily obtained, and can serve as a motor vehicle license and short form passport, but we aren't there, that ain't happening, and I don't trust the current administration to do it without forcing minority status on it and forcing minorities to carry it everywhere

On one hand yes, but on the other hand, it means that the trans Americans really don't deserve what we'll get.
