Great, when will it be available though?

What do you mean by that though? What I object to is reducing the problem to the label. I agree with the sentiment of the OP title, and what I see in the linked thread is people dismissing the idea of a possibility of addressing the problem with basically reductive semantic arguments like

You are aware they will all be social media as well right?

The technology of social media is just writing + ways to find it. The criticisms being leveled apply way better to the narrower technology of large scale, opaque content algorithms (which for most are indistinguishable from social media because the only use platforms that have it).

I would be concerned about the privacy implications, but imo it is ok to do if it makes you feel better and isn't causing problems in your life. Seems kind of similar to something like writing fanfiction or keeping a diary, only you have a tool to help prompt what you write.

There was actually one published a few days ago that concluded that it can be effective:

Participants with depression experienced a 51% reduction in symptoms, the best result in the study. Those with anxiety experienced a 31% reduction, and those at risk for eating disorders saw a 19% reduction in concerns about body image and weight.

However the person who did the study shares your concerns:

I asked Heinz if he thinks the results validate the burgeoning industry of AI therapy sites. “Quite the opposite,” he says, cautioning that most don’t appear to train their models on evidence-based practices like cognitive behavioral therapy, and they likely don’t employ a team of trained researchers to monitor interactions. “I have a lot of concerns about the industry and how fast we’re moving without really kind of evaluating this,” he adds.

Also they did another article about difficulties and pitfalls of making these things

Either way it would be a betrayal of trust that robs you of agency over your own life. That's definitely not just financial either, any non-sociopath would also have to worry about protecting the wellbeing of their child who a terrible person has parental rights over.

I disagree about Soma being an isolated setting, there are actually lots of characters, it's just that they're all insane cyborgs who mostly happen to have their own personal reasons for attacking you.

I can't seem to find them, but before the game came out there was a series of live action video shorts made in association with it to help establish the concept and setting, I'd imagine a show being along the lines of those but fleshed out more.

I always had a hard time telling if people were trying to talk to me, which is especially frustrating because you can't safely err on either side. You always respond back, lots of intensely awkward and humiliating interactions with people having to explain they weren't talking to you. You stay quiet and wait for a clearer signal, some people will get offended and angry because they think you're purposely ignoring and insulting them somehow.

So uh, when was the last time civil liberties in the US got better rather than worse? This stuff seems pretty bad

Perfect example of how censorship is still dangerous even if it isn't the government doing it
