Yep, British English got these words from Norman French. In the 20th Century, Webster's reforms attempted to simplify American English and lost a bunch of these silent vowels.

I bought one in 2021. Cancelled my plans to upgrade.
If Northern Ireland decided to reunite with the rest of Ireland it would solve so many problems... good luck trying to convince the Northern Irish of that.
