Thanks. It probably won't, but i really do appreciate that someone cares :-) Anyways i'll probably feel better when it's the weekend, which is in two days.

Thankfully a lot of redditors are complaining about reddit now. Every month or so those types of communities seem to get a post complaining about it, so i guess that's the chance to strike lol.

If I was invited to change my habits, my first question would be: why? What could I do I can't already do on reddit? Or for what reasons would I want to do the same thing on that Lemmy-thing?

(Going to talk about arabs here, for example.) Since most arabs on reddit complain about how all pro-palestine content is heavily censored and how it's consistently enshittifying. But i mean this might be diminishing returns, but at the same time i find it insane that there are only 6 (afaik) arabs meanwhile there are whole instances for french/german/chilean/italian/etc

Pessimistic-me would also think focusing on ethnicity/country or anything along those lines would immediately open the door to endless issues and quarrels between users considering one must be living in the country, other saying one should be of such or such origin or whatever else, while others say it should be enough to have been born there

I don't think a rule banning people outside that country / not that ethnicity is very fair. I think it would be enough for it to be focused around that topic, but prefer that users also come from that place for example.

That's up to you, obviously

Not meant to boss people around with that, this is more of a general idea :p (Though i only really have one community in mind.)

I wouldn't do any because I don't care much about ethnic/origin/nationality (or gender or faith) and I can't recall any time I felt closer (or further away) to anyone because of such reasons. I care a more about what's brewing between that person's ears and depending what's brewing, I will feel closer or not so close to them ;)

I [think] i get along okay with everyone else, but i do miss having other arabs to talk to on lemmy. This isn't too big of a problem, but would be nice to solve :-)

Since I was 10 lol. Already wanted to commit suicide at that age. Doesn't help I'm going through a breakdown? today.

[–] fxomt@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago

I also lurk in those communities. I don't call, label or diagnose myself; i just kind of vaguely relate to them.

Personally i'm concerned for a whole war/more genocide in the region. But not much we can do but hope.

(Np, i noticed the comment but i knew it was a mistake c:)

[–] fxomt@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Hope you aussies are doing well in this. ACs are genuinely a necessity here, i was incredibly surprised that they didn't air condition every single building in european countries.

What's even funnier is that my country's infamous for shit climate handling + huge use of fossil oils, we're causing our on collapse xd. Hopefully we'll become net-zero and actually adhere to the pledges. Hopefully you all will too :D

You call it antagonizing, i call it curation 😎

I'd love for more irish people to be here, i always liked them.

And r/europe has 10m members, but i don't think it would be a good idea at all to try to get members of that subreddit in particular to come here.

[–] fxomt@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Yeah sucks to live here 🙃 There's also much more stuff, that's just the tip of the iceberg sadly. It'll take us a century to become somewhat stable lol.

[–] fxomt@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago

Damn, never knew about it thanks.

A massive thanks to @LuanRT for providing the fix regarding to the extraction of the deciphering functions. Also, big thanks to @PikachuEXE for coming up with a potential alternative solution!

Although this is a talk an ATProto-related conference, this has direct applicability to Mastodon and Lemmy instances.

Yesterday, reports emerged in the Vietnamese infosec community that two popular banking apps – BIDV SmartBanking and Agribank – were using hidden / private iOS API to detect other apps installed on users’ iPhones.

This behavior was initially highlighted by @opa334, developer of TrollStore, on infosec.exchange two days ago and later in a Facebook post on Vietnamse J2TEAM forum. The controversy quickly gained traction because such behavior suggests a violation of Apple’s policies and an invasion of user privacy.

Therefore, we conducted a thorough technical analysis of the mentioned bank apps BIDV SmartBanking (v5.2.62, updated on Mar 14, 2025) and Agribank Plus (v5.1.8, updated on Mar 25, 2025), detailed in this write-up, which also examines implications for users and the banking apps.

Since 2022, with Android 11, Google removed this access from app developers. Under their new package visibility policy, apps should only see other installed apps if it’s essential to their core functionality. Developers must also explicitly declare these apps in the AndroidManifest.xml file - a required configuration file for all Android apps.

For extremely specific use cases such as file managers, browsers or antivirus apps, Google grants an exception by allowing QUERY_ALL_PACKAGES permission, which provides full visibility into installed apps.

I don’t use Android as my primary phone, but I have a spare one and I was really curious to find out which apps from Indian companies had checks to see what other apps I had installed.

So I downloaded a few dozen Indian apps I could think of on top of my head and started reading their manifest files. Surely they will be respectful of my privacy and will only query apps essential to their app's core functionality? 🙃

Interstellar (!interstellar@kbin.earth) has added Piefed support!

How do i try?

Install interstellar from the play store/F-droid, and create an account on https://preferred.social/ (only instance with the API enabled, get join code from invite). Then, login from interstellar and you're done!

What's next?

Well, andrew is working on porting thunder to piefed (the main dev of it is interested in it) Admiral patrick said he might port tesseract to piefed, once the API is stable, and ae_harding said he may add it after lemmy 1.0.

Thank you @andrew_s@piefed.social, @olorin99@kbin.earth and @jwr1@kbin.earth for working tirelessly to implement this :D

Kurds in Iraq and Syria this week marked the Newroz festival, a traditional celebration of spring and renewal, at a time when many are hoping that a new political beginning is on the horizon.

Newroz, the Farsi-language word for “new year,” is an ancient Persian festival that is celebrated in countries including Iraq, Syria, Turkey and Iran. It is characterized by colorful street festivals and torch-bearing processions winding their way into the mountains.

For many, Thursday and Friday’s Newroz festivities symbolized not only the arrival of spring but also the spirit and aspirations of the Kurdish people, who are now facing a moment of transformation in the region.

FINALLY ON TIME THIS WEEK

The Sudanese army seized full control of the presidential palace in downtown Khartoum on Friday, it said in a statement, in what would be a major gain in a two-year-old conflict with a rival armed group that has threatened to partition the country.

The RSF has consolidated control in the west, hardening battle lines and moving Sudan towards de facto partition. The RSF is setting up a parallel government in areas it controls, although that is not expected to secure widespread international recognition.

The RSF said on Friday, hours after the army statement, that it remained in the vicinity of the palace, and that it had launched an attack that had killed dozens of army soldiers inside.

Note: This uses github sponsors, which is a microsoft owned middleman as @poVoq@slrpnk.net mentioned. I heavily recommend https://liberapay.com/ as an alternative. The idea of the project is solid, though

I personally think this is a good idea. FOSS is amazing but it needs some funding in reality. What are your thoughts?
