You're describing neofeudalism, where we serfs are bound not to a landlord but to a corporate entity.

I hate to use the word, "sane", since it's kind of ableist but it really feels like anyone who hasn't slipped off the deep end in America is being held hostage by fascists on the right and neoliberal in c/chapotraphouse@hexbear.net
