Thanks for pitching in and for the extra info!

I'll have to add it to my todo list since dont have a PC at hand and checking stuff/editing the side bar is a pain on mobile.

But will add it! :)

Hello Hanz, sorry for the delay! The friendica instances have been added!

It's a short list but we wanted to vet the instances a bit with criteria and these are the best we found. Feel free to suggest more if you know good instances in Europe!

Thank you for the recommendations @caos@anonsys.net!

Seems like anonsys is hosted in Austria, could put it into austria category as well since we also got a recommendation for piratenpartei.social as a german instance, so we can suggest multiple (also loma.ml!).

Appreciate it!

Edit: ah damnit, loma.ml is by invitation only. But anonsys looks good!

Okay that sounds pretty good. Thank you for helping me out! I'll put up piratenpartei.social as one of the options!

yeah also took me long enough to look into this and post about it ;)

I did find some hosted in netherlands (this is what I used initially to find instances, but also check the list view on that page)

Sadly none of the dutch ones met all the criteria listed in this post :(

Hey thanks for the recommendation! Do you happen to have any experiences with that instance? Is it hosted by patrick (breier?) from piratenpartei?

[–] lazycog@feddit.uk 3 points 3 weeks ago

Ah great idea, thanks Sunshine!

If you look at the servers that are online and hosted in europe, the amount is admirable, but sadly many of the instances do not meet the criteria mentioned in the above post.

Many of the ones in Germany do meet the criteria and I'd like to find recommendations from german users because there are too many to check and compare. We'd like to put up 1 or 2 recommendations on !buyeuropean@feddit.uk sidebar.

Awhile ago another user requested that we list European Friendica instances in the sidebar of this community, and I had to go researching.

Friendica has a pretty cool map and a list on their page of all the instances, but not all of them are actively maintained or open for registrations, so I had to take a better look at them.

Criteria:

  • signups enabled
  • european / hosted in europe
  • more than few months old
  • friendica version up to date
  • more than 0 active users (many 0 active user servers seem to be more "play around with friendica -servers or single self hosted account servers)

Surprising amount of European instances, but sadly many of them didn't meet the criteria. Here's the list I came up with:

Austria: friendica.io

France: poliverso.org

Germany: many options, too many.

I'm looking for recommendations and hoping someone here knows friendica bit better and could recommend a german instance or two!

Edit: we got some nice suggestions, thank you! Edited this post to add. Further suggestions are welcome as well :)

Edit2: fixed a mistake. Poliverso is an italian friendica instance, just hosted in france.

Sounds like a good idea, I'll put it on my todo list! Sorry for the delay, a bit of a busy week.

I'll discuss this in the mod chat since I don't know much about friendica but I believe others know more :)

Holy shit A1, so it should work! Thanks for the link and thanks for offering to check for me.

I think I'll have to give this a try. I don't have a backup phone so might wait for my holiday lol.

Thanks Rikudou! This entire time I thought /e/OS might be my only other choice.

I've seen SailfishOS been thrown around here on lemmy, but never actually looked it up.

If bank apps can be made to work on it then I will definitely take a look! Thanks for the tip!

I have been wanting to get off google's android for so long, but it's just too important to have bank apps work..

A while ago we had a post with a comic that was a bit controversial due to it being generated by genAI, but we did not explicitly have a rule against it.

We wanted to discuss this and ask the community, but this apparently had already been a topic on feddit.uk for awhile and they have made a instance rule about it (announced in this post).

Since buyeuropean community is on feddit.uk, the feddit.uk rules apply to this community and therefore I wanted to announce this new rule so it doesn't come as a surprise.

Copy of the post body text from the announcement of this rule on feddit.uk:

So no:

  • AI generated memes of images
  • AI generated answers to questions

edit: this applies to feddit.uk communities, we won’t block AI art communities on other instances or sanction our users for posting on them.

In the context of this community.

We worked the last months on a new completely ad-free database for European products, brands, services and companies. A few days ago we released the site. The website focuses on usability with a simple search form and a clear structure. After the technical development we are now in the process of filling the database with content. The website is currently available in English and German!

You can also submit your own suggestions for European products, Non-European products that you try to find alternatives to, and categories that may be missing.

If you have any feedback, we would appreciate it. If you like it and want to share it, we appreciate that too. :)

Thanks in advance!
