you can use android without being logged in to google. Especially using the Aurora app store
There are open source / self-hosted giphy types of things. Not sure what federating would add, unless you wanted content discovery or something? A link to a picture is a link to a picture, no need to re-host it across instances.
Generally, blockchain is really only helpful in very specific scenarios
- where there is no trust amongst actors (there is trust in dns, I trust you to tell me the details for your DNS records)
- immutability is important (dns records are regularly mutated, only the current state is important)
- and performance is unimportant (performance is critically important for dns)
DNS uses distributes hash tables, which is decentralized. Though, yes, there is centralization in terms of trusted entities able to issue domain names and top level domains, you can already host your own distributed and decentralized name servers

yep! Since I got the phone I got, I have never logged in to Google. Just gotta hit 'Skip' on the device setup - and you can download a .apk of the aurora app store and use it anonymously, in addition to using f-droid (tho, caveat, folks have opinions about f-droid) https://f-droid.org/packages/com.aurora.store/
