Lost, confused, mixed up, fucked up, that’s how Jodi do!

Since Idaho is a racist hellhole that can’t even admit the existence of the Spanish language, a friend was able to get a license plate reading:

JODIDO

by making up a story about Jodi and how she ‘do’.

Spitting hard facts here.

You are correct in your history for sure.

My comment was more focused on Lemmy and the reason for occasional outbreaks of nastiness. There is no algorithm in the sense you describe on Lemmy.

I meant to convey that what we see on Lemmy is a property that emerges from human interaction through this medium.

Our conversation may be an example of this. I made a comment that was short, but I thought it was unambiguous. Your reply was thoughtful and topical. But a short text requires you to fill in a lot of context. So you may create a slightly different picture than I intended.

This is a deep cut sci-fi tangent, but it applies. Being pseudonymous and not having durable social reputation makes for different human behaviors.

The algorithm in this case is the human ego multiplied by the limits of text communication.

Good sir,

The yoga community is starved for healthy male presence (practice at most studios as a man and you will be a distinct minority).

This community values the same gentle and nurturing approach you have realized that you embody. The fact that you are introspective, respectful and self aware just makes it an even better fit for what you describe.

I cannot think of a place more accepting of individual differences and the persona you describe would be very welcome in those spaces.

I wouldn’t recommend this to someone who was just a pussy-hound, it wouldn’t be welcomed.

Yoga is a sex-positive and body-positive philosophy that doesn’t focus directly on sex usually, but instead helps one become a more rounded person, part of which is healthy relationships that may include physical intimacy.

You seem to understand boundaries and respect. So this suggestion is more about how to build the kind of community where your unique gifts are valued.

I have built many valuable relationships through my practice, most all non-romantic but all very supportive. From that foundation however, my more intimate relationships have improved immensely too.

My two cents

Yeah, I have started to bait and be quite a jerk to people who are arguing in bad faith. But never in a drawn out way. I pop in, call them out for bad faith and jet.

Frankly, that’s how you should deal with argumentative people in real life, tell them you don’t want to play their game and then go find another one.

Jesus fucking Christ. These people are monsters. THIS is the hill I personally will die on, I guess.

Thanks!

Their offering seems handy based on the dashboards and tools they provide that gather and automate many features that would otherwise be time consuming.

Looking at how fast the resource demands scaled on my dinky test instance, a successful instance with a decent user base would quickly start costing a few hundred dollars a month. But their costs aren’t super high compared to unmanaged hosting.

I am actually happy this service exists because it means they see a market here.

If you are gung ho about running an instance, the automation and dashboards alone might save enough hassle to make it worth looking into further. Thanks for sharing that info.

You mean a couple of instances?

I would be curious, can you name one of these hosting services? I would like to see what they are offering.

Yes, the concept of the fediverse is very appealing. Lemmy for instance definitely lowers the barrier to entry, but it is still an undertaking to manage an instance. Not everyone who wants to have an instance will have what they need to really do it, be it skills, money, time, dedication.

Oh i didn’t catch the caveat that the host sets it up for you.

I have not done that, but given the ease of setup, I don’t think it would be worth it. Unless they do the administration too which I doubt.

The hard truth is, if you don’t have the skills to set up an instance, you probably don’t have the skills needed to adminstrate it.

Yeah when I got into Lemmy I set up an instance on a Digital Ocean droplet. It was as easy as could be even over two years ago.

I never intended to run it for long and it is long gone now. It was really just so I could play with the database and see how federation really worked.

It only lived two weeks but the storage needs were already skyrocketing so it would have become a non-trivial expense to maintain. Once I got to the limits of the lower cost tier, i wiped it.

Now I am solarpunk 4 life

Given the engineered collapse of USAID and the NIH in the USA, as well as their turning away from WHO support, what are the most likely future scenarios? Can the other developed nations mount a credible pandemic response without the resources of the USA?

I am especially interested in global perspectives because pathogens don’t need passports. How might this impact the global order?

I am finally making the push to self host everything I possibly can and leave as many cloud services as I can.

I have years of linux server admin experience so this is not a technical post, more of an attempt to get some crowd wisdom on a complex migration.

I have a plan and have identified services i would like to implement. Take it as given that the hardware I have can handle all this. But it is a lot so it won’t happen at once.

I would appreciate thoughts about the order in which to implement services. Install is only phase one, migration of existing data and shaking everything down to test stability is also time consuming. So any insights, especially on services that might present extra challenges when I start to add my own data, or dependencies I haven’t thought of.

The list order is not significant yet, but I would like to have an incremental plan. Those marked with * are already running and hosting my data locally with no issues.

Thanks in advance.
