If you don't want to fiddle with a terminal at all you can just make a keybind/shortcut. Depends on your DE or WM as to how to do that.

I had dial up. Load a page and walk away and do something else for a bit. 56 kbit/s was theoretical max. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dial-up_Internet_access
