Reposting what I said on Mastodon, since a few people seem to be falling for this one:

[...] but this looks like satire, and searching for that poster's name suggests that he's not being serious here.
Case in point: he has a blog that shows he's not a Trumper.
https://drewpavlou.substack.com/p/maga-maoism-trumpism-as-a-third-world

Conservatives have a hard time understanding satire (article about this), let's make sure progressives don't become the same way. (I know, it's hard, especially when a lot of conservative opinions are indistinguishable from satire.)

I downvote if it looks like they are posting in bad faith. I'll upvote some comments that I disagree with if the poster was trying to contribute to the conversation -- I usually do that to offset the fact that they've been downvoted a bunch already.

Many of the communities I'm in are fairly small, so I upvote almost every comment that I read. I figure it lets someone know that someone else read what they wrote, and I think that's what a lot of us are here for.

Well, I'm glad to know that at least there isn't some obvious solution that I'm missing. I might be able to explore this myself a little later -- I've been curious about P2P things lately.

P.S. thanks for making Fireside Fedi!

What I mean is: has anyone taken just the frontend Javascript for Peertube's video player and used that by itself, without running a full Peertube server? And if so, can that video player make P2P connections with other people's browsers that are watching the same video?

Eh, yes and no. Can't say I enjoy it all that much right now, especially since I'm very out of shape for it, haha. I haven't really run in a long time and it felt like an awkward movement for the first few days. It was nostalgic, though, since I used to run track in high school. I think I would find a longer session to be monotonous, but right now my goal is to work up to running a mile and I don't really plan on having a longer cardio session than that. Also, I go in the evenings, and it's been nice to be outside while the sun is going down.

Glad to hear that Crossfit has been enjoyable for you; I've heard other people say the same (or, similar things about crossfit-style workouts). Almost like cardio is being snuck into a workout that has more exciting things in it, lol.

In addition to what you mentioned, another really annoying thing about Youtube's search is that it sometimes gives totally different results from one minute to the next. You can search for something, then type those exact same words just a few seconds later, and you get a completely different list of videos. So if you ever do get a list of good results, you need to leave that browser tab alone and open a new one to keep those results "safe."

Reddit is the first one that comes to mind for me, too. It was always easier to use a search engine like Google or DuckDuckGo and do thing I'm looking for site:reddit.com instead of actually using Reddit's search feature.

OK, I found a little something here: https://docs.joinpeertube.org/contribute/architecture#concepts-1

It says this:

Segments are loaded by HTTP from the origin server + servers that mirrored the video and by WebRTC from other web browsers that are watching the video. They are used by hls.js to stream them into the HTML element

That "from other web browsers that are watching the video" is what I'm curious about: how does it know who those people are?

Sounds like I need to learn more about hls.js and Peertube's custom loader for it.

Today I was thinking about how great it would be if I could post a video to my blog and use the Peertube video player to display the video, and also get the benefit of having visitors share the video among themselves if two people were viewing the video at the same time.

I know that I could do that by running a Peertube instance and then using the embed feature to put the video on a web page. But is there any prior art for just using the client-side Peertube video player by itself? And is that even possible, or does it need a backend server for discovering other video players? I'm looking for documentation right now about how the P2P functionality works, and can't really find anything.

I agree with what Kolanaki said -- it should be available simply because it existed, not just because people will want to play some version of Crysis. My preference is that each patch-level version of a game should be made available somewhere for people to check out. It's not simply about a product being available that satisfies some need or desire (in this case, the desire to play Crysis). Works that people have made should be available for others to explore.

Also:

If there was no alternative, and debatably superior

is that true? I'm genuinely asking. I think I actually own the remastered version of Crysis, but I haven't actually played it, as I also have the original on Steam. I thought the remastered version was a graphically improved version of the console port of Crysis, which made some changes to the way that your powers activate. And I remember everyone disliking that when the console ports first came out.

After not doing cardio for years, I ran on the track after my workouts every day last week except for one (and that was simply because the gate was locked).

Also did well on bench press. Not a PR, but close to it.

Metal Gear Solid. Only had a few minutes to play it -- I mainly just wanted to see how it looked, so I only got through the very first introductory room. Looks just like how I remembered it. I bought the collection with MGS 1, 2, and 3. I've already played a fair amount of the first game (although like...15 years ago), but never beat it. I only ever played MGS 2 on a friends Playstation 2 occasionally, and have never played the third game. So I'm really looking forward to those.

I've been listening to this one lately since Justice has a new album out now. I think Audio, Video, Disco is my favorite of theirs.

I was just looking something up on caddyserver.com, which is not a retro website by any means. But, when I got to the very bottom of the page, I saw some classic browser buttons that I haven't seen in a very long time. And a hit counter, too! It made me smile.

I've just bought a backpack from Frost River, the "Arrowhead Trail Eco." I know that you can't assume that something is BIFL until you've owned it for a while, but waxed canvas definitely fits that long-lasting category, and this one certainly feels solid at first glance.

This is the first waxed canvas backpack I've bought. I've owned a few backpacks in recent years, trying to find the perfect everyday + work + gym backpack, but I'm new to waxed canvas. So I'm wondering if anyone has anything that I should pay attention to as I use it for the next couple months and develop an opinion about it.

The product page for it is here: https://frostriver.com/products/arrowhead-trail-rolltop-eco

I can post pictures tomorrow if anyone wants them. I've just picked up the package and it's the middle of the night right now, so I can't even really see what it looks like yet, haha. I usually find "first impressions" reviews to not be very useful (especially for products that you intend to own for more than a decade), but there were surprisingly few reviews for this brand available, so I might just do that anyway.

I use Funkwhale for my music collection and had my podcasts in there for a while. However, I ended up not listening to my podcasts very much since they were hidden among my much larger music collection.

So I moved my podcasts feeds to FreshRSS, which I was already using for RSS feeds. I like the simplicity of using something that I already had, but it doesn't have any podcast-specific features like being able to resume where you left off.

Do you have any podcast listening apps that you like?

*edit: I should add that I originally meant "self-hostable applications for storing your podcast subscriptions," but these phone app recommendations are great to have, too. I might just ditch the server-side of this entirely and just use a separate app on my devices for listening. It would be nice if I only had to subscribe in one place and be able to pick up where I left off across multiple devices, though.

A very unexpected cover of a very 2010s song. This version has been stuck in my head since I first heard it.
