Kernel 7.4 is shaping up to be a major update.

Always happy to see more riscv work. Pity there isn't any top tier riscv hardware available though

This release brings improvements to Dolphin, Itinierary, Kdenlive, NeoChat, Okular, KMail, and other KDE apps.

While Linus Torvalds previously shot down plans for Profile Guided Optimizations (PGO) in the mainline Linux kernel, Google engineers are hoping still to get that out-of-tree functionality upstream. They also would like to see PGO supported for Linux kernel modules rather than just the main Linux kernel image. Additionally, they hope to see limitations overcome around AutoFDO and Propeller optimizations of kernel modules.

I used to use Gentoo about 20 years ago.

Whether you use them or not, they have been a huge part of the OSS community, and they're worth supporting

I'd go as far as to say they helped pioneer USABLE distro's that basically worked with compiling source code

LibreOffice 26.8 was download more than 1 million times in its first week of release, which The Document Foundation say is the highest first-week figure of any release of the free office suite.

Released on 26 August, LibreOffice 26.8 saw 1,031,162 downloads from the official website, which provides installers for Windows, macOS and Linux, during the first seven days.

It's slightly older news, but definitely something worth celebrating if you haven't seen it.. For those who believe that open source is waning.. Think again :)

Looks like a good project

Hi everyone,

I'm working on Crazy Sky, a FREE 4-player multiplayer arcade flight game.

Crazy Sky has native clients for Windows, Linux and Android. The game has its own dedicated servers, but it can also be played over LAN.

I'm currently looking for Linux players who would like to try the game and give some feedback.

If you find any bugs or have suggestions, please post them in the comments of this thread. Feedback is welcome and will help with development.

Website: https://crazysky.cybopat.net/

Thanks for checking it out!

Hello, everyone!

We are proud to announce that a tiny patch version 0.10.10b is out on Flathub!

Depending on your app-store it might be a while until you see the correct text.

Valve released tonight a new Steam client beta that includes some notable improvements for Linux users.

Most notably, today's Steam beta update now will default to using Proton for Windows binaries that are registered as non-Steam games. Running by Proton by default should ultimately yield a better user experience.

For Linux gamers the new beta also fixes an issue where non-Steam games would fail to launch when changing the target binary via the browse button.

Chimera Linux is a relatively new Linux distribution, and quite a unique on at that, as it combines the core tools from FreeBSD, the LLVM toolchain, and the Musl C library instead of the usual suspects. Despite being relatively new, it still has some serious pedigree as the project was started by Nina “q66”, who was part of the Void Linux team. At Void, she maintained the various PowerPC/POWER ports of the distribution until Chimera became her sole focus.

Nina published a detailed blog post today about how the Chimera team builds the tooling for their distribution, as well as the goals it’s trying to achieve. It covers everything from a bit of personal history, the rationale behind the project, who it’s catering to, how its tooling works and why, and the infrastructure they’ve built that underpins it all. There’s a lot to process here, with one of the most interesting little details – at least to me, as someone who has two POWER9 machines – the fact that Chimera started with the ppc64le target only.

The article is an incredibly interesting look at not just the how of Chimera, but also the why, which makes for some really fascinating reading.

Coming more than six months after Budgie 10.10.2, the Budgie 10.10.3 release introduces the ability to place desktop icons wherever you want on the desktop, brings back the Keyboard Layout applet, adds the ability to choose the primary monitor, and improves the Labwc bridge integration to listen to budgie-daemon.

Canonical and the hard-working people behind the Ubuntu distribution announced the dates of the upcoming Ubuntu Summit for Ubuntu 26.10 (Stonking Stingray), due for release in October 2026.

The Ubuntu Summit 26.10 event will take place next month, November 12-13, 2026. Ubuntu Summit is Ubuntu’s biggest event of the year, where developers and users gather together to discuss the features of the next major version of Ubuntu, attend various workshops, and see presentations of all kinds of products.

Ubuntu Summit 26.10 will also cover a wide range of topics, including the Linux desktop, application ecosystem, content and design, community, infrastructure, devices, data/MLOps and AI/ML, gaming, and security, with talks, workshops, panels and Q&A sessions spread across both days.

As for the keynote and featured speakers, Canonical hasn’t revealed any names just yet for this year’s Ubuntu Summit event, but we’re hoping to see great names from the open-source industry and beyond, so stay tuned for more details as the event approaches.

Just an open question for the community. Just wondering how you're finding OpenSuse in 2026?

I've always had a good experience in the past but haven't used it in a while.

Just thought I'd ask the community, how are you finding the latest fedora and Ubuntu betas in your everyday usage?

FEX 2610 released today as the newest monthly release of this open-source emulator for running x86_64 games/apps on AArch64 for ARM64 Linux systems, including most notably by Valve's Steam Frame headset.

FEX 2610 brings more JIT improvements, including handling for AVX-VNNI. The AVX Vector Neural Network Instructions are beginning to be used by some game libraries and thus important for FEX-Emu to support. The FEX JIT also seen some SSE4.2 optimizations, 3DNow! instruction handling has been restored, a new AVX gather optimization, and software fall-backs for RDRAND and RDSEED instructions.

More than twelve years after Hideo Kojima's legendary P.T. first terrified PlayStation 4 owners, the horror classic can now run natively on PC thanks to an impressive fan-made port that has officially reached version 1.0.1.

Developer LoreanXavier's P.T. PC Port isn't an emulator or another recreation of the game in Unreal Engine. Instead, its game logic has been rebuilt in C++, paired with a custom Vulkan renderer, while levels, models, textures, audio, scripts, and cutscenes are loaded directly from the original PS4 game files. As such, the project itself contains none of Konami's game data, and you'll need your own dumped copy of P.T. to use it.

Not really Linux News, but congratulations to them for completely surpassing their requested donation amount. Also, donations to bsd also likely filter through as more contributions on shared projects too, so it might be a small win for everyone

Canonical has changed how Ubuntu 26.10 boots on system with Secure Boot enabled, in an effort to reduce the attack surface of the boot process.

Ubuntu 26.10’s signed build of GRUB, which is only used on systems if Secure Boot is turned on, no longer supports /boot on Btrfs, XFS, ZFS, LVM, LUKS encryption or software RAID (other than RAID1).

HFS+, Apple partition table support and JPEG and PNG image loading is also removed.

Since GRUB needs to read the /boot directory to load the kernel and boot Ubuntu, if those files are on one of the affected filesystems, it can’t access them and the system won’t boot.

Ubuntu 26.10 still supports /boot on ext4, FAT and ISO9660 (used for booting from CD/DVDs), as well as, naturally, squashfs for snaps with Secure Boot enabled

If Secure Boot is disabled, GRUB’s full feature set is loaded, meaning exotic /boot setups and any GRUB customisation tweaks, like image backgrounds work as normal.
