The Star Trek Family lost five members this month. Each person mattered but with Sir Stewart, this has been a tremendous loss for so many people, not just Star Trek fans. His passing has touched us in ways we hadn’t been prepared for. The Star Trek Family, which he made arguably the greatest impact with his contributions, is hurting. For many fans, Jean-Luc Picard was a father figure and of course a role model. The Star Trek fandom is a very tight-nit community and we are leaning on each other. He will be missed.

Jörg Hillebrand has peered at blurry screenshots and hunted down illustrated Shakespeare volumes to prove that Patrick Stewart is part of Star Trek canon.

Made myself some Earl grey (my first time drinking tea) and watched Generations (my favorite TNG film, and second favorite Trek film) as well as “The Inner Light”.

Edit: also, my Linux User’s Group is having a Halloween rice competition, so I last minute updated mine accordingly.

Fans across the world mourn the passing of a true and irreplaceable legend. As Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Patrick Stewart took the starship Enterprise to places it had never gone before, and he inspired a whole next generation of star-gazers who looked longingly ahead to a brighter future for all humanity. Our hearts are heavy, indeed. Rest in the heavens, Captain.

One thing Star Trek could never do today is introduce one of its main characters as an unrepentant anticolonial terrorist, and then spend seven seasons stubbornly refusing to make her apologize for having been one. Major Kira Nerys grows enormously over Deep Space Nine. She learns that individual Cardassians aren't interchangeable. She befriends some of them. She confronts things the Bajoran Resistance did that were ugly. So the show gives her every opportunity to arrive at the comfortable conclusion you'd expect. She never does. In Season 5, a Cardassian civilian confronts Kira about a Resistance bombing that killed twelve Cardassians, including the family of the military officer who lived there. He asks whether she feels guilty, and Kira's answer is astonishing from a modern perspective: "None of you belonged on Bajor. It wasn't your world. For fifty years you raped our planet, and you killed our people. I don't care whether you held a phaser in your hand or you ironed shirts for a living. You were all guilty, and you were all legitimate targets!" Kira isn't some villain whose radicalism exists so Captain Sisko can spend the next five minutes explaining the enlightened Federation position. She's not an extremist who eventually realizes that both sides went too far. She's not even a former terrorist who has matured enough to be embarrassed by her younger self. She is the first officer of Deep Space Nine. She may be a complicated hero, but she is objectively a hero. Over the course of the series, Kira changes her understanding of people without ever fundamentally changing her understanding of power. She accepts that an innocent Cardassian doesn't deserve to die solely because he's Cardassian. But the Cardassian occupation of Bajor was maintained by an entire colonial society, not merely the soldiers holding rifles – and Kira still believes the Bajorans had the right to make that occupation unbearable. That's an incredibly uncomfortable distinction, and DS9 lets it remain uncomfortable. Which is probably why Kira feels like a character from another political universe now. After 9/11, American television certainly didn't stop making complicated or even sympathetic terrorist characters. But the terrorist became a problem to explain: How was this person radicalized? Can they be redeemed? Have they renounced violence? Are they secretly still dangerous? What they don't do is show terrorist characters saying "yes I did it, and I'd do it again" while remaining the hero. Nana Visitor herself noticed the difference years later. Talking about whether Kira could exist after 9/11, she said she couldn't imagine playing her quite the same way. Other shows could have complicated terrorist characters, she observed, but the audience was always being asked to question them. "Kira, never." And that's the genuinely subversive thing about her. DS9 doesn't ask us to discover that Kira was secretly right about everything she did. It shows us innocent people harmed by the Resistance. It lets victims call her a murderer. It lets Kira herself recognize moral boundaries she didn't always recognize before. But it never requires the colonized person to condemn her own resistance before we're allowed to consider her a hero. By the end of the series, Star Trek does something even stranger: when Cardassia itself falls under Dominion occupation, the former Bajoran terrorist is sent to teach the Cardassians how to become terrorists. The imperial power that once hunted Kira's resistance suddenly needs exactly the knowledge her resistance produced. Eventually the people who called her a terrorist needed her to teach them how to resist an occupation. Turns out terrorism looks a lot different when you're the one being occupied.

🥺 Bauza voiced many characters on Lower Decks and Prodigy. He most notably did an amazing impersonation of Takei in “All the World’s a Stage”.

Looking for an episode to watch tonight in Walter's honor. I know he was relatively a side character in TOS but I'm open to any suggestions!

While my familiarity with Bayza’s work is primarily through Star Trek, his passing hurts immensely as an Asian and a fellow Filipino. He voiced many background characters in Lower Decks and Prodigy. Most notably he did an amazing impersonation of George Takei for “All the World’s a Stage” as Sool’U and Snell in “Fully Dilated”. Most notably overall Yu was known for his work voicing Looney Tunes characters, being hailed as the modern Bugs Bunny.

You can listen to his interview with Phil Yu for the podcast All the Asians on Star Trek from 2022.

Project Overview

This is a fan-made Star Trek: The Next Generation style 3D space exploration game, developed by myself with AI assistance, built on Tuanjie Engine 1.9.3. Repo: https://github.com/zhj-ldm/star-trek-flight-game-unity

Features implemented: Full warp visual effects, phaser array weapons, space stations. Enemies include Klingon, Borg Cube and Dominion ships, focused on free space exploration. Planet rendering still needs improvements.

Project Status & Reason for Pausing Development

I don’t plan to keep iterating on this current build. My long-term goal is to create an architecture that supports easy external modding and full controllability. Tuanjie Engine does not fit these requirements, so I will not continue working on this project.

This is not a permanent abandonment. Future updates are not guaranteed.

The source code remains open source; feel free to fork and extend it. All model assets in the repo are placeholder empty files for copyright protection. Contact me separately if you want the full asset version.

Fan project for technical demonstration only. Not affiliated with official Star Trek.

Project: Self-developed Star Trek TNG / DS9 / VOY-style Ship Computer AI Agent | Open Source Repo: https://github.com/zhj-ldm/Star-Trek-voice-computer-rust

This is a fan-made AI Agent replicating the starship voice computer from Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG), Deep Space Nine (DS9) and Voyager (VOY). Functionally similar to Open Claw. You can connect your own AI models. Built with pure Rust and Electron, no heavy dependencies. Pre-compiled macOS build available; Windows build coming soon.

Implemented Features

Voice Pipeline (Pure Rust)

  • Wake-word detection (KWS, default wake word: computer)
  • Interrupt phrase (default: computer stop): instantly stop ongoing voice playback
  • Speech-to-text: sherpa-onnx funasr, better Chinese recognition performance than Whisper
  • TTS synthesis: built-in edge-tts or local goose-tts binary, configurable voice tone and playback speed
  • Anti-self-trigger protection: the agent will not wake itself up by its own synthesized speech

Agent Capabilities

  • Multi-turn conversations with context memory
  • Built-in multi-engine web search. No API keys or external binaries required
  • Multi-model round-robin support: add multiple base URLs, model names and API keys to spread rate limits; switch active model anytime
  • Compatible with both OpenAI Chat Completions and Anthropic Messages API protocols
  • Cron scheduled tasks, multi-session management, long-term memory

Skill System

  • Folder-driven skill loading: place skills into the target directory and the agent auto-discovers them
  • Skills can call the program’s built-in ASR / KWS voice capabilities; skills do not need their own speech models

Included sample skill: Personal Log system. Once activated, it continuously records audio; no file is saved during silence. It automatically transcribes the recording into a matching Markdown file. Activation uses the classic starship announcement: Personal Log, Stardate …

Fan-made open-source hobby project. Not affiliated with the official Star Trek franchise.
