Study shows young Europeans will experience years of dangerous fire weather over their lifetime as climate warms, but rapid emissions cuts could substantially reduce their exposure.

Study.

Fewer kids are being vaccinated in most European Union (EU) countries in recent years, according to Italian researchers, who warn this is reversing substantial progress made since 1980. The team looked at vaccination data on seven childhood vaccines (diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, hepatitis B, Haemophilus influenzae type b, measles, pneumococcus, polio and rubella) across all 27 EU countries between 1980 and 2024. Over the full period, vaccination rates rose in most countries for most vaccines, but 16 countries have seen recent declines in vaccination rates for four or more vaccines. Most of the recent declines began between 2019 and 2022, they say, during COVID-19. The pandemic may have contributed to the disruption of routine vaccination services, the authors add, although they caution that their study just looked at changing rates, not causes.

  • Poland has its own version of the “Sasha Meets Russia” propaganda channel. It’s run by a former employee of the country’s diplomatic service
  • That channel, “WMatrioszce” (“In the Matryoshka”), doesn’t mention the war, Russian politics and Putin, feeding viewers a reassuring dose of the everyday: Russia as a land of friendly people, an economic oasis, a place worth investing in
  • With sanctions and ad suspension in place, a Westerner in Moscow has no realistic way to make a living from YouTube. So where is the money coming from? And how, exactly, is he making Putin’s regime more palatable for the Polish audience?

First-of-its-kind research from Finland’s Aalto University’s School of Business reveals the modus operandi and operating model of the pro-Russian hacking group responsible for thousands of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks against NATO and European targets. DDoS attacks can shut down public services and disrupt critical infrastructure, however technical disruptions are not the end goal for the perpetrators

Research paper.

New research finds that contamination from chemicals banned more than 50 years ago persists across Europe. Researchers say they detected the banned chemical substances in air, water, sediments, soils, snow, and sludge, demonstrating their remarkable environmental persistence.

Summary

  • ‘Circular labour mobility schemes’ managed by development agencies and private consultancies are putting more people into precarious and exploitative positions.
  • These systems see people brought into European countries – often after they pay significant up-front costs – to fill labour vacancies with minimal protections and visas tied to their employment.
  • People are often denied the chance to settle and their ability to access their rights limited.
  • The Balkans have increasingly benefitted from such circular labour schemes—yet local reporting of worker abuse and discrimination shows clearly how exploitation is built into the system.

European migration policy supports mobility so long as it bolsters European states’ economies, but not enough to let people settle. The result is an exploitative system, cloaked in bureaucratic language, that denies migrant workers their rights. This system can be seen ever more clearly across the Balkans.
