Some hosts are threatening to strike, while others are plotting ways around Airbnb’s new restrictions. Guests, meanwhile, are celebrating.

AIRBNB HOSTS ARE melting down over a new policy banning them from making guests complete tasks that “would typically be performed by a cleaner,” like “stripping the bed, taking trash offsite, or washing and putting away dishes.”

The change, which applies to all bookings made on or after November 20, quickly sparked outrage after it was announced in an email to Airbnb hosts on Wednesday. Many began fuming online about losing the right to make their guests clean up after themselves.

“As hosts, we have a responsibility to protect our investments, our homes, and, in many cases, our personal living spaces,” one person wrote in Airbnb’s official forum for hosts. “The problem is that Airbnb increasingly expects hosts to accept the risks while limiting our ability to protect ourselves.”

This is long overdue, and stuff like this is why I don't use Airbnb anymore.

When it started, rentals used to be generally cheaper than hotels and easier to deal with. Than people started buying houses for the express purpose of listing them on Airbnb. It became a profession. And things got stupid. I don't want to pay more than hotel prices in order to get a tiny cottage that doesn't come with any of the amenities a hotel room would.

The only time I even consider it these days is if I'm doing something with a bunch of people where we need a whole house and a hotel would be prohibitively expensive. Other than that I stay away.

Changes like this make me more interested in giving it another shot.

Totally right there with you. My wife and i did a trip in 2018 to west coast usa, and we stayed in airbnb the whole time. Collections of tiny homes and garages and it was amazing. Each place was like $45 a night and perfect for what we were doing.

We havent used an airbnb in years now. Hotels give you so much more for your money now

That's exactly it. The value proposition isn't there.

You want to sell me a place for $30-50/night sure absolutely I'll take out the trash.

You want to sell me a place for the same cost as a hotel or even more, I expect hotel level service.

Even with multiple rooms at a hotel, it is often cheaper because larger Airbnb's get really expensive fast. The only issue with hotels is finding kitchen facilities so you aren't forced to eat out for every meal.
