I do not like the looks of the future. Too much regulatory capture, too much critical infrastructure based on technology too little effort has been spent explaining to the layperson. It leads to clueless and incompetent governance like this, to the benefit of a handful of the worst people, to the detriment of most of us.

Range isn't the only factor, though. Noise tolerance is another significant one, and if mesh networks take off, I think a lot of long distance radios and other devices will struggle in dense locations. Imagine tens of thousands of overlapping devices with no real capacity to coordinate resource sharing so they're all just shouting over each other.

That could be made illegal as well if the FCC felt inclined to. Radio direction finding would make tracking down mesh nodes fairly trivial for them.

You end up with a peer to peer version of fediverse or the old news group system. It's not going to be 4k instant streaming kind of network.

So…. You have extremely biased message boards, controlled by mods with no oversight, and the dialogue is controlled by a handful of users? You’re not selling it very well lmfao. There’s a reason why this isn’t exactly a thing yet, it’s just not robust or has anything useful, Wikipedia? News? Anything actually useful or relevant this could be used for? How would you send out breaking information like people need to evacuate?

It's why these things are more for hobbyist, backup, disaster recovery or if government shuts down the internet. They're not meant to be nice and convenient.

I ask again, with what information? Just having a network means squat, unless some has downloaded and stored all this information. And who’s paying for the harddrives and power requirements? Maintenance? Security?

You’re honestly selling a dream, even if the netowrk exists that it’s useable enmasse, where is the information coming from? How’s it being stored for everyone else to access? What you have in your city, won’t be in mine. How do you transfer the data between cities?

It’s a great imaginary thing though.

why, who is paying for the fediverse? and how does information appear on it?

not all information has to be stored inside these small distributed networks. a lemmy running on it could communicate with other fediverse servers still on the public internet. or with those running on the I2P network, or with those accessible some other way.

From external sources… which is what would be censored. Follow the chain, it’s about a specific scenario. Hardly any of the Fediverse is locally stored other than the comments, it’s mostly news links. Which would be blocked….

And how does Lemmy communicate with another server if there’s no connection? You’re ignoring how the system is being censored or limited. Yes if none of these were issues or a concern, you could use a mesh network for stuff. But that’s no what was asked.

Yeah:

The core principle of Tor, known as onion routing, was developed in the mid-1990s by United States Naval Research Laboratory employees, mathematician Paul Syverson, and computer scientists Michael G. Reed and David Goldschlag, to protect American intelligence communications online. Onion routing is implemented by means of encryption in the application layer of the communication protocol stack, nested like the layers of an onion. The alpha version of Tor, developed by Syverson and computer scientists Roger Dingledine and Nick Mathewson and then called The Onion Routing project (which was later given the acronym "Tor"), was launched on 20 September 2002. The first public release occurred a year later.

In 2004, the Naval Research Laboratory released the code for Tor under a free license, and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) began funding Dingledine and Mathewson to continue its development.

As were many parts of the existing Internet, cryptography, etc. It usually holds true that protecting privacy and enhancing communication is directly inline with the goals of governments/militaries, the general public, and even corporations, except when the communications/privacy of one of those groups somehow impacts the other, in this case the privacy of the general public impacting the potential bottom line of for-profit corporations.
