I've been trying to explain why it would be better to have a single active community, but the two active posters there rejected my arguments as "personal opinion"

Yep, it's kinda silly. But I have little doubt they can't all last that long. So, I'll repeat myself: don't worry too much. Keep doing your good work and one or the other community should impose itself.
The main issue for me is that I have to keep an eye on what they are doing. Instead of resting for a bit after that first "boost" phase and rely on other posters to keep the community active, it's the opposite: I have to "compete" rather than collaborate.
