Tankies, the original meaning was to refer to those who cheered when Stalin sent tanks in to crush the Hungarian communist party because they wanted independence from the Soviet Union. The term was revived when China literally crushed a student protest using tanks.

Is the China thing referring to Tienanmen or something else? Never seen it used that way

Yeah, Tiananmen. After they were done killing nobody knows how many, they literally crushed up the bodies under tank treads and washed them into the sewers.

I can think of at least two things wrong with this sentence.

Out of interest, what year did this happen?

The term was revived when China literally crushed a student protest using tanks.

Just ignore the 30 year delay...
