Congratulations! You are now in your LATE THIRTIES. You have unlocked the following attributes:

  • sleeping “wrong”
  • fatigue
  • interesting medical conditions
  • sore back
  • crushing sense of ennui
  • realization that you’re never going to get the social security you’ve paid into for your whole career

Don’t forget the crushing realization that all your childhood dreams are dead!

[–] HeyJoe@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I think about this sometimes in the way that if I wanted to start a new career or do something different and I quickly realize im to old to do most things these days... all regular sports have been long gone. Other jobs requiring physical requirements are either over or near the end. I remember seeing the air traffic controller shortage, and they showed the requirements and I laughed and said we'll I couldn't even attempt this if I wanted to since they don't accept people over 31. Lots of options are just gone at this point, and it's sad and scary.

True, a lot of options go away, but not everything. When I was 18, my dad died, and I (the youngest) was an adult, so my mom went back to school and became a nurse. She'd been a school secretary for most of my childhood (and ran a childcare center out of our house prior to that), so it was basically her chance to follow her own career path. She became an Nurse Practitioner, and has been doing that for the past 20 years (she's semi-retired). She turns 70 next year.

But wait, I'm only in my mid 20s! It's too early! It shouldn't be happening!
