The thought that Canada has any real say in what's going on over on the other side of the world seems misguided, when we don't even have control of the skies over BC's Capital, or Vancouver, and instead rely on US Jets when there's an issue.
Most people I know oppose what's going on. However, and despite all the "Elbows up" rhetoric of late, Canada is the US's removed. Our politicians have shown it time and again since the last election even. There's zero chance we oppose the US position in any meaningful way on this one. No matter how many MPs we contact, they're gonna stay as the US's removed, and do the US's bidding.
And while I don't doubt there are some agreements / trades between Canada and Israel, the scale of it is likely pretty limited. We had like 1.8 billion go between israel/canada in 2024, compared to like over 400billion with the US. Like it's pretty clear why the govt is currently mostly focused on the US trade situation. That paltry amount of trade with Israel, is also why Canada making a big moral declaration on this front is kinda pageantry -- it's not like Israel's jeopardizing a major trade partner relation by ignoring us. We're effectively just sending thoughts and prayers.
Instead of being so pessimistic, give them a call anyway.
Otherwise we're not going to get anything done with that attitude. In fact, it's exactly because of that attitude that we're in the state we're in. Because of lack of public participation in politics.
I participate, have voted green / left wing for decades. It does nothing.
My riding is staunchly NDP. Jenny Kwan at present, Libby Davies before that. The riding gets practically no federal investment because we've had a junky minority party person for decades. Nothing changes at the federal level. Writing to Jenny about any issue is utterly pointless, based on experience writing her multiple times over the years. And it makes sense she ignores her constituents, because her re-election is practically assured since the riding always goes NDP.
Politics at this point is like what Religion is, in many ways. Religion teaches people to just follow the rules, and they'll eventually get into heaven -- no need to rise up against your evil masters / oppression, because they'll get punished by god in the end, so you just gotta endure it. Democracies have been engineered to serve the same purpose, while relentlessly prioritizing the interests of an elite few -- it doesn't matter who we vote for, ultimately. Same thing with recycling/climate change -- distract the poors with separating yogurt cups, making them 'feel' like there's action being taken, while letting rich people throw gas on the fire. As long as we have that placebo, we'll keep doing the little piddly shit and ignoring the big problems caused by a small minority of people, even as we literally watch the world burn around us. The illusion that our votes matter is just the evolution of the mechanism used by the wealthy to placate the masses.
The country elected a person to try and stand up to Trump, and we got a guy that bent over to kill the DST on a Sunday based on the Orange Fascists whims, and who's busy putting in the sort of rights-suppressing legislation that Trump and American interests want. I'm convinced that any "deal" he works out, will ultimately be selling out large swaths of the Canadian population -- he'll justify it by saying it's a net-positive, or better than the alternative, type of language, and the cbc/media will spin it as needed.
I'll keep "doing my part" by throwing my vote away every election for a green / left party. But I can't be fucked to try and do more in between. Part of democracy is needing to accept that the majority of people just don't give a shit.
You know what? I totally share your feelings towards Canadian politics. It's god damn disheartening. For decades now I feel like our voices are not really heard. Parties make promises during election time and fuck us over as soon as they're in power. The only time we've ever gained anything is when the NDP actually had some leverage in a minority government. And we don't give the Greens enough support.
But this time, if your MP is not liberal, you should still call your MP and even call Carney's. Let them know that what's happening in Gaza is unacceptable and that we can't just stand aside and let it happen.
As bleak as it all is, let's just try this one time. It's 5 minutes. It's not that big an effort.
Canada should do it obligation to stop genocide like international law say since canada signed both geneva and genocide conventions end of the story.
We are doing everything we can stop help ukranians knowing that our contribution eon't stop russia so why can't we do the same against israel
Canada should also have shutting there effin mouth instead of saying israel has the right to defend itself by support israel attack on nuclear facilities a big war crime
