I'm not sure if it's just that my palate became more picky as I've gotten older, but I remember canned soups being pretty decent as a kid. Nowadays I usually cook my own food, but recently I've been trying canned soups again, and I'm astonished how bad most brands are. Campbells or Progresso are either bland or taste actively terrible. The only ones I've tried that actually taste good are usually kinda expensive, like Amy's or Snow's.
Curious if anyone here who was an adult 20 or 30 years ago can confirm that affordable canned soups tasted better in the past, or if my memory is deceiving me.
Was wondering if it was just me. I used to remember the chicken noodle being salty AF but not awful, and now it tastes more like the can it came in. Pretty bad.
At least some part of this is related to aging. Our sense of taste seems to diminish as we age, but also we get exposed to more and more complex flavor profiles as we go through life. Canned soups dont even taste salty to me anymore, they just taste bland.
Oh, I don’t doubt that. I’m an amateur “chef” or at least a cooking enthusiast. I’ve had to ask for more help checking flavors as I’ve gotten older. But those soups have deteriorated in quality faster than my taste buds.
Oh yeah for sure.
Same. Oddly, store brand condensed tomato soup is great.
You're not wrong. Progresso in particular is nasty.
