New pope selected: White smoke has risen above the Sistine Chapel, the signal that cardinals have chosen a new pope on the second day of the conclave. His identity, and the name he will take as pontiff, will be revealed soon.

pope francis died in april. a month before this in march, SNAP (survivors of clergy sexual abuse) called for investigations into Prevost.

In a letter dated March 25, Shaun Dougherty, president of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), submitted documentation to the Holy See’s Secretariat of State and three additional dicasteries, asserting that Cardinal Prevost’s handling of abuse allegations raises grave concerns under Pope Francis’ accountability norms set by Vos estis lux mundi.

side note, because it still irks me: Conclave was such a great movie in isolation, but in the real world I hate how it presents a Catholic Church that clearly doesn't exist. fuck that entire institution

I was checking Peruvian news about the new pope, and there were a lot of people saying that the accusations cover-up against Prevost were orchestrated by the Sodalitium (Far-Right Catholic Group known for brainwashing people and abusing children, that Pope Francis dissolved in 2025) and the Peruvian Far-Right.

The media diffusion of the “cover-up” came from different right-wing Catholic portals, all defenders of the Sodalitium. The interest of the Sodalitium in this issue: to accuse its main critics in Peru of being straw men (Prevost recommended the retirement of SCV Bishop Eguren).

As for the facts, the diocese of Chiclayo led by Prevost published a communiqué in 2024 stating that it was Prevost himself who brought the complaint of abuse before the relevant Vatican authorities; the case is still open at the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Thus, to accuse Prevost of being a cover-up is fallacious, since he took the denunciation to the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, he only complied with not allowing an accused person prohibited from practicing his profession to practice it.

Robert Prevost, the new Pope, was the one who gave, as head of the Dicastery of Bishops, the final recommendation to Pope Francis to remove the former bishop of Piura José Eguren Anselmi, linked to the Sodalitium.

Prevost issued a report stating that it was “unacceptable” the permanence of Eguren for his links with land trafficking mafias and for having “parallel accounts” in the Archdiocese of Piura. This after receiving the conclusions of the Scicluna-Bertomeu mission.

Paola Ugaz and Jose Enrique Escardó Steck (journalists who exposed the crimes of Sodalitium) seem to have been close with Prevost.
