There is a lot that is not under control of the individual.

For work, I have to be in another city. I got a place that has a train stop at the end of the street. As soon as I started the new job, they fucking closed the downtown office so now I'm paying a premium to live near a train that I cannot take. I have to drive fucking 45 min through traffic because while there technically is a train that goes out to the exurban office, the stop is several miles away. Maybe I could walk or take a bike, but there are no sidewalks nor bike lanes out there. No bus. I could take an uber or something, but I'm going to pay for a train ride, spend the time on the train, then spend on an uber 2x a day. Winter is pretty nasty where I work, so even if I were brave enough to ride a bike down the road where cars are normally going 60mph, it'd be worthless for the winter.

Not everyone who drives to work wants to. I love living in town but now I never actually get to do much in town because I'm always out at that fucking worthless office out in the middle of nowhere and wasting time and money to get there.
