background info (and a bit of an apology): im pretty sure that a comrade on here also confessed to this and i shunned them for it. this was because of my own shame and internalized moral panic. now that i am being more open about it i no longer feel the urge to shame others. i would like to apologize to this comrade and if you recognize yourself in my message please feel free to dm me if thats what u want.

some of our comrades subscribe to an openly genAI position and believe that friend AI chatbots will actually cure loneliness and social isolation. i oppose this belief and i want this thread to be a discussion about the bad effects of using this technology especially as a child. if you are pro genAI this might not be for you.

I mean I am probably considered "pro AI" but that doesn't mean I support people using AI chatbots to cure loneliness and social isolation lol. That would probably just make a person spiral more into isolation and not get better, assuming they can even get better.

AI is useful for like technical stuff. My PS4 controller broke the other day so I pulled out a very old adapter for an older controller to work with PC, but it didn't work well and was glitchy in Steam. Rather than just accepting I need to shell out the money for a new controller, I just asked an AI bot to quickly whip up a daemon to translate inputs from the old adapter in a way that would be compatible with Steam so I could get back to my game, and it did it in a few minutes. Got back to my game in a few minutes and saved me money.

People like myself who find AI useful as a tool doesn't mean we support anything bad you can imagine about AI. I think most people would agree using AI as a "cure" for social isolation is not only a bad idea but probably dangerous as it could drive a person to delusion or insanity. They are technical / productivity tools, not people or friends.
