I had a thought, this is done to reduce opposition to age verification. Most people who really care about privacy will use Linux and open source. So now a lot of those will not care about the age verification being thrust on Microsoft/Apple users because it doesn't affect them.

    This is likely an attempt to kill Linux and to an extent FOSS.

    If sites require OS level age verification, then you can't visit them if your OS doesn't have it.

    It's not the same. Linux is unkillable. However the proprietory software purveyors can try to slow down the growth of Linux.

    It won't work.

    If you marginalize it so its no longer usable on the modern web to do all the things you need to do.. Then yes, thats the same as effectively killing it.

    It's likely not even an attempt. High chance none of the people writing these bills even has considered that to the degree needed.

    They just know people complained and pushed back, so they changed it to be in line with the protestors. And since lobbiests haven't pushed back it sits where it is now.

    Things rarely go so deep to have purposeful sabotage. Sabotage though ignorance, laziness and knock on effects tend to be WAY more common.

    Age checks are just a combo of easy political points for Re-Elections via think of the kids. Easy points with donors cause they ask for it for data harvesting reasonings.

    Actually pushing Linux aside likely doesn't come across either of their minds. One just wants brownie points the other wants your personal information.

    I'm sure that was an added benefit, but the market share of Linux users is not that big to give a political care about. This was likely a result of effective lobbying to the right people willing to listen to reason.

    ETA: I'm still against Age Verification, and throwing Linux a bone doesn't change that.
