It's the closest analogy that makes sense at a glance. It's clearly not the mouth, and since we mammals only have one other air vent, that just leaves the nose. However in actuality they have non-breathing scent detectors that are totally separate from three breathing system. It's like if your nose could smell but not be breathed through; instead you breathed in through your mouth and had slits on your throat used to exhale.
