Pro-Palestine activists occupied the British Museum’s Great Hall during the opening of its Bayeux Tapestry exhibition, demanding an end to the museum’s ties with billionaire Igor Tulchinsky over his financial links to Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, Middle East Eye reported.
Tulchinsky sponsored the exhibition and funded a community centre in Efrat, an Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank that is now subject to UK sanctions.
The direct action was organized by Energy Embargo for Palestine, which also called for the museum to end its partnership with BP, establish a staff-led body to oversee sponsorships and partnerships, rename the BP lecture theatre and reject funding from fossil fuel and arms companies.
The protest follows a Middle East Eye investigation that found the museum removed references to "Palestine," "Palestinian" and "Israelite occupation" from displays after lobbying in 2026.
Protesters also demanded full transparency over Tulchinsky’s sponsorship, while the group plans to unveil a "People’s Tapestry" presenting a community-led account of history.
