Ad for a tube tester. These were found in drug stores, grocery stores, and other venues. You would rock up with some tubes, and plug them into the right socket on top. Then the tester would tell you if the tube was good or bad. If bad, it had drawers full of new ones, which you could purchase to replace your bad tube.

When transistors took over, there was no longer a need for tube testers, and they faded away by the beginning of the 1970s.

Can confirm, actually walked to the drugstore with a bag of tubes, identified the bad one, and bought a replacement when I was a kid.

I am not super old, just in my 50s, but the tube TV lasted a long time.

  • That's crazy, I'm in my 40's and I never saw one of these, despite being a couple years behind you. The best I can suggest is that heavy ass rotary phone..

    And knowing in a few years there will be a post about the component drawers in the back of RadioShack,I'll be there to say, I member!
