Or something that goes a bit deeper onto each instance and explains them better? I have a mutual on mastodon that I recommended Lemmy to, and tried to link join-lemmy.org/instances, but it doesn't really do much to warn about hexbear/lemmygrad/.ml/etc. Those instances are defederated from a LOT of lemmy and i don't want my moot to sign up there and not even know that they're not really experiencing the Lemmy experience that I'm recommending.

I don't wanna start a war in the comments about instance dramas, I just wanna find a better resource to recommend Lemmy as a 'reddit alternative' -w-

Okay, if you're just talking about the DPRK having prisons and executions, yeah, obviously they do. A lot of countries do, it's not unusual. I guess you want prison abolition and restorative justice, but the material conditions to do that don't exist yet. We are limited by our material conditions, all a poor country can do is put people in prison and put them to work and kill the worst offenders.

But it's a joke to smear the DPRK as being especially heinous when the US prison system exists. The DPRK could perhaps reform its prisons some, but it still needs them to maintain stability and sovereignty. The US could abolish its prisons, it just won't.

If you need an alternative to US imperialism and tankie dictatorship, how about getting rid of any hegemony

Do you think I disagree with this?

The """tankie dictatorship""" is something that exists because of hegemony. Actually existing socialist countries are responding to the empire's meddling, that's literally why they are the way they are. A country that does not repress counterrevolutionary forces is a country that will fall to color revolution, and we have seen this over and over and over. If Salvador Allende had immediately begun building a military apparatus to defend the revolution and criminalized counterrevolution, Chile might not have fallen to CIA meddling.

EDIT Venezuela failed here too, because they didn't build up a military. If they had spent the past nearly-30 years since Chavez's election building rockets and drones to shut down the Panama Canal, they could have defended the revolution. Instead, they focused on peaceful development, and we now see that was a mistake.

Those are the choices. Use violence and repression to survive, or peacefully open up and die.

Once the empire falls, these systems will need to change. Until it does, though, they're necessary to maintain sovereignty.
